What makes it special?

I think that is a matter of individual perception and quite different than success although it informs success.

Some would say the MX Tools, others, the ubiquitous presence of the developers on the Forum answering questions and responding to user suggestions. Still others would like the integration of XFCE, appearance and ease of use. We have heard all these praised on social media and the Forum by individual users picking the features they like.

What made it special enough for me to promote it every chance I got for the last 2 years? The fact that it JUST WORKS. Has done so on EVERY desktop, laptop, notebook, and netbook I've ever tried it on, from an ancient 1.75GB AMD Athlon XP1700+ based desktop to relatively modern Lenovo x131e thinkpad with an i3-3227u and 8GB RAM. And about 22 other systems in between. Can't say that about any other distros, though there's about 10 that come reasonably close. Been watching it climb on Distrowatch from circa 110 to 11 in approximately 14 months. To me--THAT is SUCCESS!

Warren really knew his stuff, didn't he?

And so good with his user friendly GUI tools.

That 2003 edition still looks like something a newcomer could use and be productive on in the present day.

And that login sound file! Do we still have that somewhere?

Nice to see an old friend. I used the second version that came out in October of 2003 and stayed with it pretty much throughout its iterations, with a brief foray into Kubuntu at some point. Warren really did a great job with Mepis. And in the installer you can still see his influence today on MX. Thanks for posting anti and asqwerth.
