I Cern leaves Microsoft, has chosen to use "open" software
The Cern of Geneva abandons Microsoft and for its computer equipment it switches to open source, that is open software. The European Research Center, which gave birth to the World Wide Web, made the decision for economic reasons. The Redmond giant, in fact, decided to revoke the status of an academic institution that allowed a discount on licensing costs. The new contract would have included a sum to be paid for each user, which would have considerably multiplied the costs for the use of the Windows operating system.
Anticipating what would have happened, the CERN started last year to develop the Malt program (Microsoft Alternatives), with which it has embarked on a path that will lead the European institute to dispose of the proprietary solutions to the advantage of the "open" ones, an operation that will result in significant savings in licensing costs. "The goal is to regain control using open software. The project is ambitious but it is also a unique opportunity to demonstrate that it is possible to realize the most important services without an exclusive agreement with a seller", Cern explained in a official post.
CERN Accelerating science!
Re: CERN Accelerating science!
Me thinks that it is more than just a money issue.
With all the billions they spend on digging holes back there in France/Switzerland... a few million (at most) would not even be a pinch for CERN.

Re: CERN Accelerating science!
... And Microsoft in already inside the linux kernel now ( via some blobs).

Intel or is that Is**el inside?
Have to check the book of synonyms...
Must be careful not to play political games.
But it is a fact, there is an Intel lab in the Middle East (and it is not Saudi Arabia).
Re: CERN Accelerating science!
@danielson: Are you dreaming? no synomyms here, only a pragmatic fact , I mean inside the kernel and the hardware (ex: the microcodes for the cpu, also amd, some wifi cards etc) no?

@oops - true.
Which leaves all Linux distros in same fragile predicament right?

Re: CERN Accelerating science!
@danielson ... Hopefully not necessarily, it's just a simple observation, but why, is it your point of view?

And above all, what are these remarks about?

Yes, and where is the problem?

Re: CERN Accelerating science!
@gosia - think we'll just leave at that.
Whatever reasons CERN has, who knows! it might be a huge boost to OpenSource and Linux world too! yes!!
