Thanks to all that responded. The re-install of Win 10 worked and I have a working laptop again although definitely not my OS of choice. Although I'm sure that in time that problem will be solved as well.

You could check out MX 18, as its updated graphics stack might support the newer Vega GPUs.

That's my intention, but I'm going to wait until the final version is issued. I also have two five year old desktops. One is running 17.1 and the other is running the new beta.

MX 18 Final wouldn't install and I got the same errors as before. I think that a bios update is my only option and there are 3 available for this laptop. Acer is unfortunately vague about what each update actually does so I am going to have to do some research before I decide on which one to apply (if any). The saga continues.
