pdf reader for win 7 (Solved)

#1 Post by j2mcgreg »

Hi Folks,
I know that asking a Windows question on a linux forum is a bit odd, but I'm hoping that some of you still service Win boxes for pocket change and can help me out. My sister needs windows for her job and Acrobat Reader DC has imploded on her laptop IE: it was uninstalled by the Adobe uninstaller and now can't be reinstalled because the Adobe install routine insists that a newer version already exists. It's vicious circles like this that made me abandon Windows 15 years ago. Anyway can anybody here recommend a free non-Adobe pdf reader for Win 7?

Thanks

j2mcgreg

Foxit did the trick.

Thanks again
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
Aspire V5-571; CPU Intel I3; 500 GB SSD; Intel 2nd Gen Graphics; 8 GB Ram
Aspire XC-866; i3-9100; UHD 630; 8 GB ram; 1TB HDD

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

For the folks I do support, and some indeed still using (or have to) winOS
I do recommend : either SumatraPDFreader , which is based on Linux's mupdf ;=)
https://www.sumatrapdfreader.org/news.html
and has the advantage of no javascript execution, which is a securty issue on it's own in this other OS :lipsrsealed:
Or if that is a too easy one and too fast one,
PDF-XChange Editor, where I always disable javascript in the settings first.
It's mainly a PDF-Viewer, with some free editor functionality.
https://www.tracker-software.com/produc ... nge-editor
( The name of that canadian company is a bit misleading though  )
Both above run also within Wine, (not tested recently with PDF-XChange Editor)
They do have also a pure PDFViewer, but do develop now only the Editor.

Sumatra is a great choice, too bad it has no Linux support. I tried mupdf and it really feels somehow inferior to Sumatra (especially since it is a mostly command line program and has no interface elements). It might be good on an older laptop of mine, but maybe not suitable for my frequent pdf usage.
