@all:
I happened to find this: http://www.linux-magazin.de/ausgaben/2016/10/bitparade/ well-written and well-researched article from LINUX MAGAZIN about the use of SIP softphones on Linux in professional company environments.
SIP (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session_I ... n_Protocol) is a communications protocol. Unlike the Skype protocol it is open and well-documented. This made the creation of Free/Libre Open Source (FLOSS) communications applications possible (e.g. Linphone, Twinkle). SIP providers also enable you to call normal telephones, usually at very cheap rates.
Bottom line of the article, with respect to MX-17, would be:
* With respect to data security, professional company use could require a non-proprietary protocol (which SIP is), and SRTP (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Re ... t_Protocol) capabilities (in jurisdictions in which labour law and business data handling regulations force companies to choose the best security possible when it comes to the protection of employee-to-employee-communications).
* Ekiga can't do SRTP yet. (The wonderful Twinkle, which hasn't been tested, can't either btw., and has been discontinued.)
* The testers recommended only Jitsi and Linphone for classic standard SIP tasks. (Btw. as for now we don't have Jitsi in MX-17's Test Repo yet, nor an up-to-date Linphone version.)
The test has been published in October 2016. Given the fact that development is slow in the standard SIP field, this means it's still pretty much up to date.
Unfortunately you'd have to rely on an online translator unless you understand a little German.
Enjoy!
Greetings, and a nice weekend to all of you, Joe

thanks for the info
I can't get Linphone 3.6.1
to configure on MX18
it reports any port I choose as being in use.
default port 5060
any ideas?

@galen:
Linphone 3.6.1 has shown to be extremely buggy. Besides, it is extremely outdated. I wouldn't think it's worth wasting your time with it.
4.1.1 is the current stable. If you want to test it, you might file a friendly package request in viewforum.php?f=134.
(There's a Flatpak available, but you probably wouldn't want to go down that road. Besides, you might encounter issues that you wouldn't encounter when running from a generic package.)
Having 4.1.1 available for testing would certainly be a good idea.
Greetings, Joe

agreed on Linphone 3.6.1 it's log shows it can't open a transport layer,
I guess that means it needs a slew of dependencies like ortp , which wont compile for me
side note:
been trying to get blink working as well

repo

@galen:
By the way, regarding the nature of this thread here, you'd better open a separate thread if you wish to discuss a specific piece of software that hasn't been mentioned in the original posting. In fora, side notes, as interesting as they may be, tend to confuse discussion.

In case you file a package request (see above), I guess the logs from your package building attempts would be helpful for the repo men.
Interesting, but I I don't see how this would be Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS)?galen wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2019 11:04 pm side note:

@galen:
Jitsi didn't work for me with MX-16 (viewtopic.php?p=418089#p418089) while it was available via the MX Test Repo (see viewtopic.php?f=97&t=42240&p=415909).
Until now no availability for MX-17.
Apparently difficulties installing in MX-18 (see your package request here: viewtopic.php?f=97&t=57198, and here: viewtopic.php?f=134&t=45888. Maybe you'd wish to bounce your original package request and support the newer one.
Greetings, Joe
That's great news! Saw your success story here, too: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=51772&p=517712.

This seems to be rather off-topic here, however very interesting. Maybe you'd wish to open a thread on easy GUI file transfers via LAN? Interesting topic for office work.
