about time. UEFI is superior in about a bazillion ways from the user standpoint.

all the stuff vendors put in to make UEFI machines "legacy compatible" is a PTIA. Either/or but not both is simpler.

I'm surprised to read this. UEFI is a proprietary OS including boot loader and considerably bigger than (Legacy) BIOS. It's not a true standard. The implementation varies between different motherboards. I don't bother with UEFI. Legacy just works, because it initializes hardware and then does nothing. UEFI on the other hand can do dirty tricks like injecting code during boot. Windows 8 and later allow for this and Lenovo used this functionality to reinstall their software/spyware to Lenovos that were re-imaged with clean Windows ISOs.

According to some, Intel hijacked the UEFI spec in 2005-2006 and turned it into a mess; 10 or 100 times the size of BIOS. From my own experience running multiple OSes on same HDD, UEFI does nothing better (for me), but is harder to use. I'm also curious about power-related problems reported on Linux forums. My first suspicion is Systemd. My second suspicion is UEFI. Why let a giant blob sit between your hardware and OS, it's a bit like using proprietary drivers when good FOSS drivers are available. Yeah, BIOS is also proprietary, but much smaller. My belief is that by using Legacy BIOS you disable some of the UEFI “hooks”. Coreboot/Libreboot would ideally replace BIOS.

I've got nothing against a more open approach to boot firmware. And I think it would be great if coreboot/Libreboot came pre-installed and began to replace BIOS on shipping AMD or Intel motherboards. But it doesn't seem to be catching on...both AMD and Intel are resisting supporting it...and right now you need to be willing to flash your own.

Do have any recommendations for motherboards? I'm about to replace mine on a home-built unit.

I've done a number of builds over the years and have had great luck with ASUS.

Have you ever tried flashing them with Libreboot?
