I don't know much about hardware. My newest systems use Ivy Bridge (2012). I read somewhere that the firmware/microcode package is recommended for Haswell (2013) and newer. I use the blobs that come with the distro/kernel by default, but I don't use tools available in Ubuntu and MX Linux to install additional blobs. This approach has worked well on my Intel PCs and also a few AMD mini-PCs. I can't say that new hardware excites me, I'll upgrade when I have to. I have no idea what I would upgrade to. x86 hardware seems to require more and more blobs.
