Just when you thought there were no programs ...

#1 Post by KernSpy »

Just want you thought there were no programs for Linux.

Linux: Installing Software: http://linuxnewbieguide.org/?page_id=106

This is a listing of various sites with listings of software for Linux. Always check and use your distro's repositories for installing software. Also, don't forget about the MX-Package Installer in MX-15 Fusion.

I have to stop and ask myself sometimes .. What do I do? Do I really need that program? Do I really need 7 music players? What do I really need? For me it is fairly simple. I don't have an office, so I don't really need any office software. I don't edit videos, so I don't need video editing software. I don't record my desktop, so I don't need any software for doing that. I don't have any money, so I don't have to worry about financial software. ;)

So what do I do?

Well, I like photography and I like edit them on my computer. I also like to edit graphics. I print quite often. I'm always saving files to a backup drive. I like to read. I'm always putting / ripping music onto my computer. I like adding music to my portable music player. I like to keep my text documents in order. I like to play games sometimes. Mostly old dos games. I guess that is about it.

So what are my favorite programs? What is my favorite program today, may not be my favorite tomorrow.

I do like - The GIMP, but I still struggle with it. Learning to make changes with settings just to draw a straight line, isn't really my idea of fun.

Right now I'm trying out - MyPaint, which is pretty darn nice.

Just the other day I noticed (via one of the list below) that XnViewMP is available. I had totally forgotten about it. I hope it lands in our repositories sometime. You find it here - http://www.xnview.com/en/xnviewmp/

I know LuckyBackup works and is pretty good, but I'm thinking about adding CloneZilla for saving copies of my Linux partitions. Always good to have another good drive / partition cloning tool. You can check it out here. http://clonezilla.org/

Just recently started using DeadBeef as my main music player. A nice (easy on resources) player that has everything I need and then some. I got it from the Test-repo. The home of DeadBeef is here: http://deadbeef.sourceforge.net/

I like electronic books and I own a nook. One program really like using is: Calibre. It can convert between various formats and has a bunch of great features. You can check it out here -
https://calibre-ebook.com/about

Another program that I just started using recently and like quite well is - CherryTree. Cherrytree is what's referred to as an "hierarchal" note taking application, meaning it's designed to store your entries in containers, which some programs call "notes" or "pages" and Cherrytree calls "nodes". If you envision the Cherrytree document as the root of a tree, and each "node" as a branch in that tree, sub-nodes as branches off that branch, you will start to get the idea. It is really being able to keep all your notes in one place. http://www.giuspen.com/

(( Will add a few more later. ))

I haven't announced it yet in a thread, but we do have the latest releases of Calibre 2.50.1 and MyPaint 1.2.0 just added to the test repository.
