kudos to rasat for the cool respin experiment.

Is elogind solution for MX systemd question? [OK]
Re: Is elogind solution for MX systemd question?
So far everything works fine with upgraded beowulf from ascii. Both Xfce and Gnome are running. I did two upgrade attempts 1) first didn't get lightdm to run. 2) replaced with Slim, works fine.asqwerth wrote: ↑Wed May 22, 2019 11:57 pm But it's the Buster/Beowulf upgrade that will be the real test for installing Gnome I believe, not the stretch to ascii conversion.
I'm not sure, but I think that Devuan's Stretch analogue (ASCII) might still not be fully systemd-free, so Gnome might still work on it. I'll be interested to hear the results of that (ie, Beowulf and Gnome) test.
Lightdm may not be a problem, because there were broken package installs what were fixed later. After installing Gnome, re-installed lightdm and works fine.
MX Beowulf Respin (Xfce) is currently uploading, will post url later in different thread.
This solution sounds OK....my concern, is Devuan a reliable and long lasting base?

I suspect that if you want to keep using Gnome with no-systemd distros, the answer lies with the Gnome devs.... is Devuan a reliable and long lasting base?

I don't know enough to give a direct answer.
What are your thoughts, skidoo?

The screenshotted "Conclusion" is not the overall // final remark within the thesis.
85pp, recommended reading ~~ I did read it fully in 2018, and again earlier this year.
He and the other dyne.org principals have stretched thin their attention, across numerous projects
https://www.dyne.org/
Following much hoola and fanfare...
(e.g. on kickstarter.com, where I first discovered "dyne, and the Dowse" project)
...each project, it seems (or not, you decide) has been left to languish, unfulfilled.
Granted, those principals are "a step removed"
dyne.org : devuan :: spi (Software in the Public Interest) : debian
but in terms of "the buck stops here", one is left wondering: Where is "here"? Who is steering the project?
Is it obvious (or not, you decide) that the VUAs are primarily engaged in server-centric pursuits?
Longterm success//failure of its "desktop linux" suitability likely rests with its derivatives. The distro's shining star derivative (refracta) has slid off the DW homepage; it, and the devuan distro itself, remains noticably spartan // uncurated // unpolished.

Some people like an "unpolished" distribution, and that is in fact the intention of the developers:skidoo wrote: ↑Fri May 24, 2019 1:46 am Longterm success//failure of its "desktop linux" suitability likely rests with its derivatives. List of derivatives here:devuan.org wrote:Devuan is conceived as a base OS on which to roll your own distro.

I can particularly recommend Star & Crowz to those looking for a systemd-free Openbox desktop.
And Refracta is still going, fsmithred is now a Devuan developer

^--- Respect! That side of the equation needed to be said; thanks for doing so.
BTW, videos from the recent "Dev1conf" Devuan Conference, containing presentations by Katolaz, "phred", et al
