Warren never got around to creating a M12 version of the "Mepis User Assistant" package (mepis-user).
Could MX User Manager be backported for M12 users?
MX User is probably installable on M12 without backporting anything. I think one would just need to add the xfce-4.10 CR repo, or manually download the mx-user and mx-viewer packages and install them with gdebi.
That said, I think some parts of MX User are more or less specific to MX-14 and might not work that well with M12.

The Mepis 11 "Mepis User Assistant" might also work with M12, it's available here: ftp://ftp.mepis.com/mepis/pool/main/m/mepis-user/ (the mepis-user_10.9.98 i386 or amd64 .deb package)

I mentioned "backport" because I wasn't sure about the Qt version.

Thank you, Jerry3904. I printed the Smxi wiki article. I will try downloading and running it from X tomorrow after backing-up my user files.

I'm a bit surprised that as a Mepis user since 2006 you never had occasion to use sgfxi. I think you will like it!

I frankly never heard of sgfxi/smxi before Friday Sept. 19, 2015.
Got it installed.

Okay, I will select the graphics option w/ Radeon since this brand name appears above. . .

Re: KDE 4.8.4 (MEPIS 12) BSOD limbo for one user only

#16 Post by eemaestro » Sat Sep 19, 2015 3:23 pm

I ran smxi as superuser. First I used it to to an apt-get update. I got eleven errors similar to this one:

Code: Select all

Err http://ftp.debian.org wheezy updates/contrib amd64 Packages
404 Not Found [IP: 64.50.233.100 80]
After seeing a total of eleven like this from wheezy/updates I found a loose cable on my ethernet. So I pushed in in and reran smxi as superuser. It created /etc/X11/xorg.conf
use x-configure command
Yes
apt-get update failed another three times.
I pressed on to graphics update 6, and got a couple warnings that said

Code: Select all

libstdc++5 cannot be authenticated
libg11-mesa-g1x cannot be authenticated
eventually got to the text-only screen labeled
AMD Catalyst Proprietary Driver 15.9.1 Installation
and updated /etc/X11/Xorg.conf
and when I rebooted my computer, got a text screen showing a blue bar on the bottom left and the label Debian GNU/Linux 7 (wheezy) in blue letters on the bottom of the screen.
That was the last thing I saw. The BSOD followed. FAIL.

I am disappointed the script doesn't try to display graphics while you're running it, so you abort loading the driver if it doesn't work
on your monitor, but without X, I guess that's impossible.

With no graphics, I had to reboot from the MEPIS 12 Live DVD in order to get on the web to post this message.

I will run smxi again & see if I can undo what I did.

PHEW! I undid what I did.
Ran smxi again. Went straight to 7-graphics & installed
AMD Catalyst Proprietary Driver 15.9.1 this time
and afterwards got dumped into a shell where I typed

Code: Select all

#startx
and logged into aroot Mepis KDE account.
The graphics looked same as before (normal).
So I logged out & got the terminal message

Code: Select all

xauth: (argv):1: bad display name "mepis1:0" in "remove" command
#
so I rebooted and checked out my user accounts.
YAY! I can log out as user1 and get the graphical MEPIS user dialog box
and log in as user2 and then back out. It's pretty basic to be able to do this
without recycling power to the CPU.
Success, Thanks to Jerry3904. I appreciate your help in resolving this situation.
