dev team,
please do housekeeping on stable repo.
it takes a long time (few mins :p , long enough to irritate) scanning thru 52,000 packages, sometime it also crash.
please get rid off obsolete packages, segregate packages for mx15, 16, 17...future releases.
thank you.

Speaking only for myself, I greatly appreciate that the repo team provides as many packages available as possible, including older ones which are usually well-tested, and also ones from projects that appear to be abandoned but shouldn't be forgotten.

Usually nobody scrolls through 52000 packages. You type in what you look for, and then you get an overview.

"Cleaning up" as you seem to define it would basically mean limiting people's choices.

Greetings, Joe

Test repos quirky ... tried installing Audacity from Test and it gave me 150 updates and a vast number of removals as well ... not good! I declined the install and got out of MX Package Installer. However, the Update Manager insisted that I had 150 updates1 Went to Synaptic, checked the repos, and sure enough, the Test Repos was activated ... unchecked it, reloaded and went about doing other stuff. NORMALLY, when you opt out of an installation in the MX Package Installer (Test or otherwise) it should NOT keep the Repo activated ... it should only be temporary during the time that you are using it ... little bug that could cause HUGE problems to folks who rely on the MX Package Installer ... certainly could bork their app installations .. have a look-see yourselves. This package needs a fine tuning folks!

If you exit normally from the MX Package Installer application it should remove test or backports repos (it does that correctly in all my tests), however if you force the exit it won't have the chance to do it. I can do some things to mitigate that (also make it a bit harder to quit by mistake), expect a update in a couple of days.

@Adrian
Thank you for your quick response ... was a little frustrated because I tried a number of times with the same result ... was also taken aback by the huge volume of updates and removals of other apps & depends to simply have a more recent version of Audacity ... after doing some research regarding this on the forums I found that Audacity (Test) was built against a newer version of ffmpeg, hence the effect on other apps from Stable if you install the newer version ... by the way, Audacity just reached 2.3.0 ... I am an audio/visual creator and need stability overall from all the multimedia apps I use ... definitely going to stay away from Test repos ... Stable works just fine and if I need something more recent I usually use AppImages where available.

Mx is the best OS I have ever used (2 years without any major glitch) and always recommend and/or install it for others. Thank you again!

Could you post the output of

inxi -r

just to ensure you've now got the correct list of repos?

Audacity 2.3.0 isn't in upstream Debian yet, but I do have the debianized source from both a PPA and deb-multimedia...the PPA is actually closer to the 2.2 Debian version than the deb-multimedia, oddly enough. I'll see if I can build it against the ffmpeg 3.3.4 in our main MX repo so it won't want as many other test repo updates.
