In case anyone is curious, the answer was no. It just needed an extra build-depends that the qtbase5-dev in Stretch and upstream would pull in automatically, but not Jessie's version.

Shotwell 0.30.1 from Debian testing. Builds on standard Stretch with the exception of debhelper 11 and meson (>= 0.43.0) build-depends. (Both are in MX 17 or stretch-backports already)

Ported over meson (program building tool) 0.47.2 from stretch-backports (done).
Trying to backport meson 0.48.1 from Buster.

Update: also, SMPlayer 18.10 for MX 15/16 and 17.

Finally got Krita 4.1.3 to build by following this fellow Debian backport-crazy guy's example I just found on the OBS:

Maybe I can then get Krita 4.1.5 also built, as well as some of the other newer ones he's got like obs-studio.
