I have the source for the latest 2.0.2 release--I'll take a look at it.

I'm struggling to understand why, vs every other editor, XED would be appealing?
Is it not just a rebranded "pluma", rebranded for use within the Cinnyminny desktop environment?
https://github.com/linuxmint/xed

lookit:
https://github.com/linuxmint/xed/tree/master/plugins
vs
https://github.com/mate-desktop/pluma/t ... er/plugins
seems like XED has fewer available plugins than does pluma

Maybe (i don't know) XED is the "fully entrenched in GTK3" variant and pluma can still be built against GTK2???

https://github.com/linuxmint/xed/issues
Because the 62 open issues (many sitting unaddressed for a year or more) indicate to me that the devs are not adequately maintaining this app, I personally wouldn't choose to use it.

I always thought xed was the fork of gedit, without the incongruous gtk3 client side decorations.

Same as xviewer being a fork of Eye of gnome.
Desktop: Intel i5-4460, 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics
Clevo N130WU-based Ultrabook: Intel i7-8550U (Kaby Lake R), 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics (UEFI)
ASUS X42D laptop: AMD Phenom II, 6GB RAM, Mobility Radeon HD 5400

Clearly gedit was their common ancestor, but I don't recall that XED was forked directly from gedit.
Its changelog does indeed mention pluma.

I can build 2.0.2 packages using xapps from the test repo, then the rest of whatever packages we have in MX 17 main (probably the newer meson we have there prevents the build failure i got with Stretch's meson).

However, it shows up in the menu as just "Text Editor", just like other Gnome apps that rather arrogantly show up as "Movie Player" "Web Browser" and the like, so I think I'll patch the desktop file so it shows up as "Xed Text Editor" instead.

I hope all the translations I added "Xed" to in the desktop file don't end up unintentionally funny, or that xed isn't some curse word in those languages. It should show up in the test repo very soon.

If they do, we can hope they have a good laugh! If we ever talk I have a few English readings of German text that left me on the floor laughing... we all do them.
