Well we have libdvdcss, vlc, handbrake, wouldn't fit makemkv into the same slot, somehow?
VLC and handbrake, as well as all the other players, use libdvdcss2. We don't ship that with the ISO or host it on in the repo. MX codecs gets it from deb-multimedia, based in France, where it's legal, but Debian also has a package that'll get the libdvdcss2 source code, build a deb, and install it, which gets around the legal restrictions. https://packages.debian.org/stretch/libdvd-pkg

If makemkv-bin does have code in its binary blob to break encryption, it's illegal for us to host it in our repo per US law.

[edit:] Here are github instructions for Debian unstallation:

I expect that you won't find much in the way of support for Make MKV in the Debian world, as it is not free software, apart from any possible breeches of the laws of certain countries.

I think I had to jump through similar hoops to be able to install MKVToolNix. You just do each thing in order. Copy & paste to the terminal makes it pretty easy in the end. ;)
MKVToolnix just manipulates MKV files, which are not what's on encrypted discs, is open source, and is in the Debian repos. Let me see if I can backport the latest 28.2.0 release from upstream, too.

Thanks Stevo. Bringing MKVToolnix into the MX repos will certainly make it easier for those that want to use it. It really is a wonderful piece of software. :)

There is the old version in Stretch, but we now have the latest 28.2.0 in the test repo. The Stretch 9.8.0 version was ported over from deb-multimedia, and the packager forgot to remove the "-dmo1" branding, which could lead to some confusion.

Wow, thanks, man. I use MKVToolnix at least twice a week. It's frequently updated. This will make staying current so much easier.
Son, someday all this will belong to your ex wife.

I'll make a thread for it tomorrow so you testers can report on how it's working out.
