Xfce Panel Switch

#1 Post by Jerry3904 »

This was developed by the Xubuntu folks, and looks pretty nifty. I downloaded the version for Ubuntu 16.04 and it installed without problem in MX-16.
Xubuntu 15.10 “Wily Werewolf” introduces a new application for managing panel layouts in Xfce, Xfce Panel Switch. This is a simple utility application that fills a void for appearance tweakers and distributors alike.

Features

Backup and restore panel configurations
Share panel layouts with simple exporting and importing
Choose from one of 5 included layouts, or install layouts system-wide in /usr/share/xfpanel-switch/layouts
Seems like it might be a useful addition for us (it's GPL-3+)?
Production: 5.10, MX-23 Xfce, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 16 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Personal: Lenovo X1 Carbon with MX-23 Fluxbox and Windows 10
Other: Raspberry Pi 5 with MX-23 Xfce Raspberry Pi Respin

No clue, just installed it to see if it worked after reading a post on the Google + Xfce site. Maybe it would be redundant...

It's different combos of both top and bottom horizontal panels, based on a Youtube video I just watched. No option to switch between vertical and horizontal layouts.

I like the ability to save and transfer configs easily, and wonder if we could eventually merge it with our existing app.

when you change layouts, does it preserve the custom launchers and plugins, or does it reset the config?

From what I saw, it can save any configuration and restore it as it was. A detailed look will have to wait until after work...

I can't tell from the video. I'm guessing that because each layout they give you is different, like having a dock (2nd panel) at the bottom or not, it doesn't preserve your configs across the layouts but you can save your configs for a particular layout and restore that when you choose than layout again.

Took a quick look. I saved my current layout, then clicked on the Gnome layout and it was instantly there. When I went back to my saved layout, all was good except that a separator at the top above the clock was changed into a expand and filled the top quarter of the panel.

I do see some potential though, and will keep looking at it.
