pulseaudio 5

I am in the process of drafting a "Sound" Doc, and see that pulseaudio 5 is in Jesse. Is that something that could be made available for MX-14/M12 without going crazy?

I ask because there are a lot of Skype users in the world, and if they are going to be forced to use Skype 4.3 then it would probably pay to have the current version of pulseaudio available so as to minimize any resulting problems.

OK--interesting in that the new Jessie version does not start pulseaudio systemwide with an init script any longer, only on a per-user basis, and gives a link to this document:

So Debian had been doing it wrong all this time?

It seems to also want a newer avahi-daemon than we have, but that appears to only for use by the init script, which does not get installed by default any longer, so I'm going to try and fake it.

Edit: Though I'm more in favor of "if it ain't broke, don't mess with it", if Debian has been doing it wrong all this time, this would be an improvement.

I'm not sure if there's any way around it--will google it a bit more.

I did build the new version of Conky-Manager 2.2--the original 2.0 release needed a newer version of GTK 3 than we have, but apparently the developer fixed that. The problem is that he did not keep the themes compatible with the older version, so the old theme packs won't work. There are some new themes and a new theme pack, but many of the "totally sick, dude" themes are gone. It should be easy to switch between the two, though.

Well, whaddaya know--a little Googling led to Debian bug 736877, which says that having oss4-dev installed causes the problem, as it installs some different headers than libasound2-dev, then diverts to them. I got a successful build on 64-bit after removing that package. Let me add a Build-Conflicts for oss4-dev to the control file, rebuild on 64 and 32 bit, then you guys can test them out before they go into the test repo. I still wonder if they will pull in systemd, or require systemd to be running in order to work, though. It would be a great time to back up the system first before trying these!

I think the pulseaudio deb just needs the newer libpulse0 and pulseaudio-utils. Another that should be installed is pulseaudio-module-x11, which allows it to run when the x11 GUI starts up. Maybe also the zeroconf module. Not sure about the gconf and glib packages...

Not quite getting this: these are neither dependencies nor recommends, then? The user will need to install these afterwards manually?
