Ndiswrapper 1.59 for Mepis 12

#1 Post by lossy »

The set of 4 packages is available in jessie, but when installed on my 11.9.92 setup it prevents the system from fully booting. KDM never starts. I am unsure if a custom package for mepis would resolve this.

Thanks,

Brian

Well, I'll try rebuilding and installing them in a virtual machine. Your bad experience makes me a bit leary of these.

Where exactly does your system hang up on the boot? Can you turn off Plymouth with <Esc> and read the boot messages?

Also, what device are you trying to get to work? It may be possible to get a native linux driver to work with it.

In connection with ndiswrapper, it may be worth mentioning that, on Mepis 12, with the ndiswrapper from wheezy, I found it impossible to install a windows network driver which had installed and worked perfectly on Mepis 11 - installation being performed using the Mepis network assistant, which unfortunately is unavailable in Mepis 12.

The (rather unimportant) result being that the relevant machine, a Samsung netbook from 2009, still runs Mepis 11, and has not been upgraded to Mepis 12. The wifi device is a Realtek, for which there is a native driver in wheezy, which works fine in connecting to the Internet, but refuses to connect to my home network.

As indicated, this problem is of minimal importance to me. I can add that this is the only aspect of Mepis 12 with which I am not entirely happy. It serves as my main linux installation on my desktop machine, which uses a wired connection.

Best wishes,
Peter Stone

I quite understand that wheezy is the base for 12. I have a usb wifi card that I am using. I am running a native linux firmware with it to connect successfully however under heavy load it drops out. From several forums I have found that other linux firmware, has been found to exhibit similar behavior. This was resolved by using ndiswrapper. However when I install 1.57 that is available in testing or stable modprobe fails with a fatal error when trying to start ndiswrapper. This however can resolved by building 1.58rc1 or installing 1.59. I attempted to build 1.58 and it failed make with error 2, it was unable to find the kernel source build files for the mepis 3.9 pae [sic]. After installing 1.59 ndiswrapper, my entire system hung hard when I did 'modprobe ndiswrapper' I couldnet ctrl+esc, ctrl+alt+bckspc, etc. After restarting it looks like it is starting X or maybe kdm, pressing esc it does give one modprobe error early on, but continues to load and when it goes black with a underscore in the top left momentarily, it hangs there. ESC does nothing etc.

Did I miss anything that would be helpful?

Well, I've backported 1.59 from Jessie--you should let ndiswrapper-dkms try and build modules for the kernel automatically. It did fail with my Liquorix 3.12 kernel that I'm running, but succeeded for the stock 64-bit:

Done.

It install perfectly. Thanks so much!

Just having trouble figuring out my blacklist so I can use ndiswrapper, but I will work that separately.

Bump: ndiswrapper 1.59-2 from Jessie has just been uploaded to the M12 testing CR. It's patched to install on kernels >= 3.14.
