If you think it is due to the new icon theme, then revert back to gnome-brave and see if it fixes the issue.
You will probably need to logout for it to show.

My netbook, also has MX 14.4 and it shows "Wired connection 1" if I plug in an ethernet cable to the same router as my desktop above. It Also shows my SSID's under wireless.
My netbook's wired connection shows the IP addresses in connection information.

After Logging in and out after each change I made I can say it's probably not connected to Icons (I tried several), the xfce4-theme-manager, or the xfce4-cellmodem-plugin.
