Thinking about the M12 kdm theme

#1 Post by Utopia » Wed Nov 28, 2012 7:55 am

Time to start working on the kdm theme. Is it necessary to have a clock and the welcome text at the top? Keeping only the center piece with the log in will look better.
Is there anyone who uses the log in screen to find out what time it is?

I do not think a clock is necessary. You are a few seconds away from the default clock on the panel.

No clock for me either. I would like to try to get Warren to put the MEPIS version in the top, though; we had it once, but then it disappeared again.

I second the version number.

It's easy to add the Mepis version. At least it looks like anyone can do it. Will make some experiments.

Actually, I believe the best is to have it automated if possible so it reads a version file, probably one of those listed on this Wiki page. It would be best IMHO if he would update the version number with every release, something he started forgetting to do the last time. That info could be expanded to include KDE version, kernel version, etc.--all of which I believe would really be useful.

Yes, if that's what is wanted, Warren must do it. I was thinking of a more generic text, like Mepis 12.

On second thought, I seem to remember Warren's saying that KDM is very limited, so my idea may not work.

If we hard code all that, on the other hand, then any info on KDM--including MEPIS version--will become out of date with any upgrade unless KDM is also upgraded, and that is what Warren stopped doing.

And it would be worse to be out of date then not there at all.

Thinking more...if we just hard code in the release (e.g., MEPIS 12.0) but not the version, it should remain correct for a long time.

I have a file /etc/mepis_version that reads
11.0
, but I am not sure if I added that myself at some point.
