My Icon

#1 Post by sdbingm » Wed Mar 16, 2011 4:30 am

I'm trying to make a 'start-here-kde' icon. How do I get the little white corner parts to be transparent?

I downloaded your start button to view it closely. The corners are already transparent but some image viewers can't handle transparency and add white. The pyramids in the middle are also transparent.
If you are going to use it for M8.5 or M11 you've better make it svgz instead of png (used in M8).
Use inkscape to get svgz files (compressed svg).

Thanks for the response Henry. I don't suppose you could fix it for me, I'm in over my head when it comes to graphics formats and editors.

You didn't say if it was for M11? And do you have an original svg file for it?
Transforming a png file to svgz will make it rather ugly and distorted.
I haven't checked if Warren is still using the svgz file we sent him for M8.5 or if he has chosen a different solution in M11.

Yes, I'm using for M11.

I created it using Gimp, so I guess the answer would be no, I don't have an original svg file.

I made a few start icons for Mepis, you can find them here http://www.flickr.com/photos/23959276@N ... 753407463/ they don't display well on the net, you need to download them to see what they really look like.

The problem with yours is when you put it to use it kind of looks all dark, it looks nice in it's larger size. I use GIMP to make transparent.

The reason it looks dark is probably that it's semi-transparent and the panel is black.
Duplicate the layer and merge in Gimp. Repeat a couple of times.

Ok, so since I have a very limited understanding of what Henry is talking about, can anyone that actually knows how to use Gimp or Inkscape or any other graphics editor for that matter, take the image I created and turn it into a nice looking icon in whatever format it needs to be in?

TIA,

Steve

This is what it looks like when the transparency is removed from the center of the image by duplicating the layers and merging.
You have to figure out if it's possible to use a png file. All I know is that Warren asked for a svgz file.

Ok I can live with that for now. Png files seem to work.
