For me this works, so I wonder how you are doing this?

Just keep the shift pressed the whole time, so before even clicking anything.

Please run Quick System Info then just right-click/paste in a reply. No need to copy/paste, Quick System Info already copies it for you and pre-formats it for posting in the forum. Thanks.

It is not like you click a file first, THEN press shift and select the other file.

You need to press shift first, THEN the first and last file.

It could happen that you are simply doing it in the wrong order, so I had to make sure.

Whoever requested that you run that MX tool wasn't aware that you're using antiX. It can be confusing sometimes because the MX forum tries to support both distros, MX and antiX, and the majority of topics are about MX.

By the way, the way that I always do it is first left-click on a file or directory to select it, then press and hold shift and left-click on another file/directory lower down, and the entire range of them gets selected. (Then I release the shift key.) It's exactly the same as Windows and MacOS.

Your file manager may be set up such that a single-click opens files rather than just selecting them (a single-click opens files instead of a double-click.) In fact, I'm very sure that's what is happening. I know how to change settings in MX to fix that but I don't remember how to do it in antiX, but I'm sure someone can tell you. If you're using SpaceFM there must be something in its settings that you can change to eliminate that behavior. You can explore its dropdown menus and settings and see if you can find it yourself.

Usually if single-click is configured to open files then hover the mouse cursor over the file without clicking will select. Does hovering the cursor light up the selection rectangle?
Also it appears you have .pdf files configured to open in Geany text editor which is wrong. Do you have a PDF viewer on your system such as qpdfview? You should change your settings to make that the default application.
I think you have two separate problems both of which should be easy to fix.
