Would love feedback.
It worked:

Care to try it with an antiX kernel? I'dlike to get some feedback on how well our kernels work on that hardware.

You can use cli-aptiX to install a new antiX kernel (4.19 or 5.1 series if you wish)

Thanks

Sure thing, I will try that tomorrow and report back.

As anticapitalista implied, cli-aptiX is probably the easiest way to install a new kernel, especially an antiX kernel. Of course you should feel free to use whatever tool works best for you.

Sorry BitJam, I missed your post:

Were those instructions easy enough?
Yes, they were fine but antiX-cli-cc doesn't have Network → connmanctl so I used Internet Tools & Apps → ceni instead; I had to rfkill unblock all then delete the /etc/resolv.conf symlink and create a new file manually but it worked eventually.

Thanks folks, much appreciated. I prefer a bare Korn shell and the basic command line tools but I can make do with bloated, buggy, slow old bash just fine

The antiX 5.1.5 kernel works well with my E485:

Good job! :number1:

EDIT: for some reason connman sets a local nameserver, not sure why (there isn't one running).

connman functionality provides (includes) a DNS proxy

Currently trying ICE + Compiz - no crashes like with Xfce, but alas, no effects either.
Have not used Compiz extensively since the good ol' KDE R&R 3.5 days say 10 years
back - zero progress in GUI/DE/WM since then - excepting memory hogs everywhere

Thanks

Jack

icewm and compiz are both window managers, so I don't think they can run at the same time. so if you still see the icewm toolbar and menu, then compiz problaby isn't running.

lenovo s21e - antiX-19 beta 2 (live-USB)
FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

Good to know. Thanks! That was a spelling mistake on my part. I will also disable the ceni entry if connmand is running.

If you boot with "disable=c" (possibly with other letters as in "disable=lxcg") then we won't start the connmand service and ceni should work OOTB. I'll make sure connmanctl gets added to antiX-cli-cc and make sure it works there.

I did ponder that eventuality - cycled thru all the desktops in ICE, and boot [FI] but could not detect
an entry for Compiz ... but thank you, will explore that avenue & report back ...

Regards

When I boot to X, usb partitions get automounted. Not my cup of tea but so be it. They get mounted with "noexec" which I found inconvenient. Is this needed? Is this the best default? IDK.

BTW: this can be fixed manually with:

Code: Select all

sudo mount -o remount,exec $DEV
where $DEV is the device you want to execute programs on.
