Ok
... tested the x32 version into virtualbox, and seems to work correctly here ... with only ~ 91MB of RAM at startup, nice work (128MB for the x64 version into virtualbox too ... so 29% less for the x32 version).

Install on real 32-bit failed because GRUB was set to install on fd0(4KB) as the system boot disk. Repeating the install and manually selecting the correct boot disk from the drop-down was successful.

Just installed it in VIrtualbox 5.2.30 (host=KDE Neon, because I haven't updated it for ages).

Did a sudo apt full-upgrade. Quick impressions:

1. Nice! Papirus-antix is looking very good.

2. Internet works - host machine is on an ethernet connection.

3. Sound works.

4. youtube in firefox - sound and video are running smoothly.

5. default 4.9 kernel - no resizing possible in Virtualbox VM.

6. installed 4.19 LTS patched kernel from Packageinstaller and rebooted. Yay! Resizing is back!

7. hmmm, I can't seem to get streamtuner2 to play anything, and at times it freezes or hangs, and I have to use appkiller to close it.

8. poor man's radio works.

That's about it so far.

Will there be a newer kernel version for the release?

My ThinkPad E485 (Ryzen 5 2500u with Vega 8 graphics) won't load the desktop at all with kernel 4.9 and my Intel AC-9260 wireless card has the wl kernel driver assigned to it :-(

If you run the live USB stick on a machine where it does run on 4.9 kernel, you can use live kernel updater to install a newer kernel into the USB stick, I believe. I think you then remaster the stick and after that, you can use the live USB on your Thinkpad.

I don't know if we are going to release an iso with a newer kernel or not.

In case we don't, here are instructions for updating the kernel on the live system from the command line. It may look daunting but I believe it is pretty easy. Would love feedback. I suggest you boot with the cheats:

Code: Select all

disable=lxg db+ 3
The "g" disables gpm (console mouse) which I found to be very annoying. The "db+" will automatically log you into tty2, tty3, and tty4 as root. It also gives you a nicer prompt and a few other things. The "3" starts you out in runlevel 3 (no X) and automatically takes you to tty2.

Code: Select all

  0) use <up-arrow> to get the antiX-cli-cc command and press <Enter>

  1) Navigate to Network --> connmanctl to enable wireless
      Here is a cheat sheet:
          agent on
          enable wifi
          services
          connect wifi_<tab>

  2) Navigate to System --> cli-aptiX and install a kernel

  3) Navigate to Live --> live-kernel-updater to update the kernel

  4) This will interrupt itself to let/force you to perform a remaster

  5) finish the live-kernel-update

  6) reboot

BRILLIANT! Thank you!

Were those instructions easy enough? I could write a script to walk people through the process.

BTW: I made a little wrapper for connmanctl that simply prints my little cheat sheet before calling the real connmanctl:

Code: Select all

Commands for making a wifi connections in connmanctl
----------------------------------------------------
    agent on
    enable wifi
    services
    connect wifi_<tab>
    [wait for connection to appear]
    quit
    ifconfig -s
----------------------------------------------------

connmanctl>
