AntiX on SSD external disk with persistence

#1 Post by marcoC »

Hi !

I am newbie with antiX.

I have tried to install antiX on my external SSD with persistence-all option, but I failed.

What the correct procedure to have an external SSD with persistence files inside SSD ?

Regards,

marcoC

AntiX starts correctly from my SSD, but it is impossible to activate persistence mode.

When I select F5 in persist-all mode, it displays two partitions:

sda1: my laptop under Debian 9 (ext4)
sdb2: 3 GB antiX-uefi (vfat)

but it is impossible to select a partition in which save the persistence files.

My SSD is 1T capacity. I would like to save persistence files on my SSD.

Regards,

marco

Have you tried static persistence?

I did a full install of antiX to an external ssd for not long ago. That's of course is different from what you have been trying to do here. But maybe an option to consider. I created two partition one EFI and one root. One can have a third as well for home.

I have tried in static mode with the same results.

What you mean with EFI partition ? A Boot partition ? How to get it ? With Gparted ?

We need BitJam to comment on this problem: I hope he will appear later today.

For an installation in UEFI-mode an EFI-system partition is necessary (maybe it can be done without it as well, but in that case I am ignorant of how)

It's a FAT32-formatted partition of anything between 256-512 MB and flagged as boot, esp. All can be done with Gparted, yes. And then you could create one partition for / and format it as EXT4. If you choose to, you can have a separate partition for home, EXT4-formatted as well.

I use to do this with Gparted prior to launching the installer. Once the installer is launched, you just point it to the partitions you have created beforehand and at the end choose the EFI-partition/ESP as the location for the installation of the Grub (one needs to pay attention to pick the right one if there are other EFI partitions on other disks connected to the system). This is how I have done with all my UEFI-installs and it has always worked.

Please note that this is the method for a full install of the system. Not what you have been trying to do, namely to have a live system with persistence. antiX runs just fine here, fully installed on my external ssd.

Let's get some more info.

1. How did you make the live media on the SSD?

2. is the SSD connected via usb?

Let's get those too things and then go from there.
