antiX on Samsung Chromebook 3

#1 Post by Buck Fankers »

Walmart will be selling this one (Intel Celeron version) for 100$ for black friday and I want one with one condition of course, that antiX works on it. I have no use of ChromeOS. So I'm not interested in side by side install with use of Chrouton, but wiping ChromeOS out and replacing it with antiX.

Anyone has any experience with aniX on Samsung Chromebook 3? AntiX lightness and speed should be perfect match for it, but I don't know how is hardware cooperating? Is bios causing any problems, is install miss and match, etc...

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Chromebo ... 01N5P6TJW/

Processor 1.6 GHz Intel Celeron
RAM 4 GB ddr3
Hard Drive 16 GB Flash Memory Solid State
Graphics Coprocessor Intel HD Graphics 400
Chipset Brand intel

p.s.
I don't have user account on antiX forum, I hope there are enough members here also :-)

As long as write protect on bios can be bypassed and a new bios installed like in my thread shown above. There are only one show stopper. The SD card reader works OOTB. < out of the box > . But stalls on copying files that are large. Fail to copy can be a common error on the sd slot.
\
Using rox file manager or spacefm. No difference. I blame hardware. Pendrives no problem. SD to pendrive adapter. No problem. Laptop turns on and boots when the lid is lifted. My thread also covers the touchpad settings.

Other than the sd slot weirdness. Which works but is slow. I got no complaints or show stoppers to complain about.

@ the other chromebook members. I still have not fuddled around with write protect any more on that spare cheapo unit I bought. I figure a hardware issue is blocking me from blocking off write protect for a bios change.

Motorcycle wrenching has priority when the weather cools down here. :anispider2:

Thank you, so it should work!

I removed write protection screw. I did this first, before going to developer mode, I hope it shouldn't matter?
Then I switched to developer mode and after restart I replaced BIOS with MrChromebook? (does it matter which one to use, is Lewis one better?
Everything seemed OK, backup of the original bios and msg that everything was successfully done.

So I plug in memory stick with the latest 64 17.2 antiX, (that I booted it on another computer and works OK) I get Antix boot screen that is different, text only, without rich graphic, or F options, and if I choose to boot, all I get is black screen. There is something going on with the graphic. This chromebook has some cheap integrated intel graphic card.

So I'm not sure what o do next, do you happen o have any ideas. AntiX USB memory stick boots nicely on another computer.
Looks like MrChromebook BIOS is installed. I can with <ESC> key enter into bios, I can change boot options... but I didn't see any video options. Menu with: "list devices" is empty. But otherwise bios seems like it is OK.

Well, I can't run memory test. It gives me: error: disk 'hd0,msdos2' not found.
Hmm, maybe is something wrong with bios, graphic card & eMMC are not being detected?

P.s.
I was following these steps, pretty detailed and easy to follow:

There was one more thing. After switching to developer mode, and opening crosh with Ctrl+Alt+T, I could not use that cd: curl... commands. I was getting error that command was not recognized. I couldn't even run ls or cd.. these basic commands didn't work. But I could run 'top' for example.

But it did work when I switched to TV2 (or whatever it is) Ctrl+Alt+-> (right arrow). I then manually entered cd: curl... command and after that everything seemed like it should be...

I will create another iso tomorrow, I will try with Gallium 3.0 just to see if it will make any difference. But I really want antiX.

Update, I tried with MX and it booted normally with graphic off USB stick and I'm installing it now, so looks like BIOS is OK, something else is causing me problem with antiX memory stick

Final update before bed. MX 17.1 works so, looks like nothing is wrong with hardware.

Since MX works, it shouldn't be a problem to get antiX to work also. I just don't have enough experience, actually none for antiX and very little for Linux generally. Any suggestions are welcome ;-) Since this is one of the slowest chromebooks you can get, with slow Celeron N3060 I think that antiX would be much more suitable. Although I was surprised about MX performance so far on this calculator

I'm surprised, how good is MX performing on this computer. Above all reasonable expectations. I though only antiX would be fast enough. Now I'm thinking to just keep MX on it.

Yeah. Keep MX on it. My AntiX install was more of a learning curve process for me. I used John Lewis bios which is a simpler bios than what ypu described MrChromebook bios seems to use.

If everything works Roll with what you need.
