Half the system stopped working after updates

#1 Post by KoO »

Just now ran apt (update && apt full-upgrade) their was about 45 mbs of updates now half the system has stopped working. Cant even get to slim screen anymore.
synaptic is not on the system anymore , urxvt no longer works plus more.

4.16.13-antix.1-amd64-smp

Now mx17 is saying that these updates are available. Updating at the moment is not on my priority list.

You are leaving the MX repo enabled on your antiX installation? I recall anti saying once that that was not recommended.
Desktop: Intel i5-4460, 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics
Clevo N130WU-based Ultrabook: Intel i7-8550U (Kaby Lake R), 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics (UEFI)
ASUS X42D laptop: AMD Phenom II, 6GB RAM, Mobility Radeon HD 5400

No with antiX I only use the mx testrepo to download apps requested like mpd ncmpcpp and the like.
This is a bit of a disappointment to me as I put a lot of work into my system.
This not going to be an easy fix reinstall will be the only way.
Going to try and different system for a while.

MX17 is staying right where it is.

Are you sure, can you show the output of "inxi -r"?
Also, you should not have those mx-* tools installed I think in antiX and if you do, a update from one version to another (mostly translations) should not break them.

What does "stopped working" mean, what exactly stopped working? What program do you try to start and it doesn't, do you see error messages?

No problems here after those Debian and MX updates on four different MX 17.1 installs (two in virtual machines).

Note that having the mx test repo enabled in antix is almost certain to cause major system problems, as our repo is not systemd free and antix expects a systemd-free environment (through its no systemd repo).

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

I just reinstalled last night as I keep all stuff backed up anyway. Was going to try a different system for this but its all too scary out their. ( it not like BroTown)
The only thing I did differently this time was I install i3 from the Debian sid repo as it is the only way to get the lastest version of i3. Instead of installing form source (yes it is now turned off) https://i3wm.org/ hint Stevo bro
(i3 version 4.15 (2018-03-10) © 2009 Michael Stapelberg and contributors)
As will as installed mpd mpc ncmpcpp from the mx test repo (Can't let Stevo's hard work go to waste. thanks bro) (yes it is now turned off)
All updated and running like Farlap. :linuxlove:

Thanks for all the reply
