So apt-get update has nothing to say about broken packages? It is a double check for me.

Code: Select all

harry@biker:~
$ apt-cache policy vlc
vlc:
  Installed: 2.2.7-1~deb8u1
  Candidate: 2.2.7-1~deb8u1
  Version table:
 *** 2.2.7-1~deb8u1 0

        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
I am on a different version of AntiX than you.

Code: Select all

harry@biker:~
$ inxi -S
System: Host: biker Kernel: 4.9.83-antix.1-686-smp-pae i686 bits: 32 Desktop: IceWM 1.3.8
           Distro: antiX-15-V_386-full Killah P 30 June 2015
My repos are

Code: Select all

harry@biker:~
$ inxi -r
Repos: Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/antix.list
           1: deb http://repo.antixlinux.com/jessie jessie main nosystemd

           2: deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free

           No active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/various.list
Which are not stretch. So probably more of a Debian bug vs a AntiX bug I think. But I can be wrong. Won't be the 1st time I am mistaken in my thinking when I am posting.

I usually pay attention to the removed section and newly installed section of a terminal readout when I do dist-upgrades. Before I say yes.
I can run
Run 'apt list --upgradable' to see them.
Before I say yes to everything also if wanting more details.

I have other Video players, but I always used VLC and thought it so strange when it removed VLC and did not update: Giving me the reason of not having the dependency libfontconfig1 2.12. I always use Snaptic for upgrades, but have been trying your command line suggestions.

Code: Select all

$ su
Password:
root@antix3:/home/green251# apt-update && apt dist-upgrade
bash: apt-update: command not found
root@antix3:/home/green251# apt dist-upgrade

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  liba52-0.7.4 libbasicusageenvironment1 libdca0 libdvbpsi10 libebml4v5 libgles1-mesa
  libgles2-mesa libgroupsock8 libkate1 liblirc-client0 liblivemedia57 libmatroska6v5
  libmpeg2-4 libopenmpt-modplug1 libqt5x11extras5 libsdl-image1.2 libshout3 libspeexdsp1
  libupnp6 libusageenvironment3 libvcdinfo0 libvlc-bin libvlc5 libvlccore8 libvlccore9
  libxcb-xv0
Use 'apt autoremove' to remove them.

There is indeed an issue with the antiX vlc-plugin-base package depending on a newer libfontconfig1 than Stretch has, at least for the 64-bit deb...was it perhaps built against the version from the MX test repo that GIMP 2.10.X pulls in?

Note that building packages with pbuilder can help prevent against these type of things.
