4.14.9 Kernel crashes

#1 Post by namida12 »

I updated to the latest kernel via package installer and rebooting it works well, or appears to function a bit faster in this Ryzen system than the stable 4.10.5, but eventually when using the 4.14.9 kernel it crashes and powers down the system.

4.13.4 would first lock the screen and then the mouse would also become disabled, requiring a hold the start button for 5 seconds to get the system to power down. 4.14.9 crashes and powers down the system.

Is there any way to get a log of what is happening so I can post for anticapitalista and the development team?

namida12,

It is a bit frustrating that these newer kernels crash our Ryzen systems, especially as the Meltdown/Spectre fixes are rolled out. This may be less of a concern for the AMD systems, but Spectre is still out there, though difficult to exploit (for now).

The 4.10 is working great, totally stable for me, over 45 days combined up time with no crash or lock-ups.
I gave up on the 4.13 stock MX-17, spontaneous reboots.

The mouse/KB unresponsive was from the noveau driver for me.
But the 4.13 once or twice per day reboots, coming back to a log in prompt even with the nvidia driver installed.

I saw nothing in the log other than the rebooting, but I must admit the syslogs are difficult to read for me.
It looked like all was running, then bam, a reboot. Do they test these kernels on Ryzen systems?

I am waiting on 4.15. It will contain lots of Ryzen goodies like the temperature monitoring and native audio chip drivers for my board. (I am using the generic audio driver now, it works fine). 4.15 will be released in a few weeks, and the meltdown fixes are baked in. What are the chances it is stable, unlike the 4.13 and 4.14?

I tried the 4.14 with the Meltdown patches. (this is the MX version of 4.14.12).
I installed last night, with the MX package installer, and booted into it. Everything worked, including the Nvidia driver.

But upon checking this morning, I see the result similar to 4.13, a black screen, unresponsive KB and mouse, and the fans running.
I hit the power to reboot.

So, It did not stay running for even 12 hours, where the 4.10 had cumulative uptime of 45 days.
Something is not working with the Ryzen hardware for many of the recent kernels , except 4.10, which for some technical reasons cant be patched right now.

So, is this a kernel problem with these newer kernels, something in the MX building process (cant patch the 4.10, but that is the one that works, so why?), or is there some boot flag that can be set for the Ryzen hardware?

anti,

I updated in MX, and an antix kernel was not visible in the options to install.

Should I boot into the antix partition, and try and install 4.14.12 from there?
Are they different kernels?

What is the difference?

Thanks
