antix 17 final works live, install not booting on Ryzen-SOLVED (but-don't know why)

#1 Post by entropyfoe »

OK, I am gaining some understanding of my situation.

In the previous thread I detailed my attempts at kernel 4.13 vs the stock 4.10.
viewtopic.php?f=40&t=43097&start=20

And it was suggested to update my rc1 to final.

I downloaded the antix 17 final 64 bit. k3b verified the md5 so the iso is good.
Burning it to a USB (using antix tools either the full live method or dd option) and burning to a DVD (burn verified by k3b) I can get to the live session. But when I install, and updating grub in MX 16, I end up with he green screen and errors, no boot, no terminal to log in.

I found an old antix 17 beta one disk, and it boots to live, and does produce a bootable installation, though the sound does not work (hey it is a beta 1 !).
So something is different in the final vs the beta and rc on THIS new hardware (Ryzen processor and Asus Prime 370 board).

To further test, I took the same USB stick, and booted with it plugged into my earlier super computer (AMD FX-8320 on an Asus Sabertooth board).
Live works well, so I installed to the test partition on that system (sda4), and perfectly usable install is created. After updating grub in MX-16,the antix 17 boots fast, and I updated, customized, configured, and added many programs.

So in short, the same USB (antix final 64 bit) produces a good install on the earlier hardware, but not on the newer Ryzen system. The beta 1 creates a bootable install, and the old RC1 produced a bootable install as well on the Ryzen system. (in fact that RC1 with the 4.10 kernel was the most stable, up for > 8 days with no crash or freezes) Recall MX-16.1 has a nice install on this same hardware, except it crashes every day or two back to a log in.

Only the antix 17 final is giving me headaches with no bootable install.

So there were some changed from rc1 to final, and I think DO wrote that they mostly affected the live session. Maybe I have some acpi problems that could be helped with come boot codes? Any ideas on this given that I am seeing boot errors on a green screen when trying to boot like :

Code: Select all

ACPI error needed [Integer/string/Buffer found [region] fff88041....

[...] waiting for /dev to be fully populated [5.772881] kvm : disabled by bios

and on a later try
ACPI exception : AE_AML_OPERAND_TYPE could not execute arguments for [IOB2] (Region) 20160930/nsinit-412
What can I check to solve this?

Thanks

Strange, Final 64 bit AntiX 17 installs without a hitch, on my MSI - Ryzen and ATI graphic card from DVD. I need to add wired internet and sound (generic card) then I have a working system that is wonderful. I have been wondering if the newer kernel is better, but have not tried.

Have no Phone connection, or Garmin.

Re: antix 17 final works live, install not booting on Ryzen

#4 Post by entropyfoe »

I will marked this solved though I have no idea why.
As I wrote, I took the ryzen machine down, switched over (monitor, KB, mouse, ethernet...) to the older machine and tried the antix 17 USB, and it worked fine.

So I went back to the Ryzen, and now the boot sequence goes past that acpi errors, continues a normal boot, and I am back with the final version, running wonderfully. I have no idea why at least three installs (Two USB, one DVD) that would not boot past an early stage. I did not make any BIOS changes. I Don't understand, but it seems good for now.

Now my original mission is to get the Ryzen hardware stabilized. The best was 8 days with antix 17 , the 4.10 kernel. (Where I am now with the final). My earlier machine, the FX-8320 machine was unconditionally stable, with uptimes of 30-60 days , or more, with occasional power failures, or reboots just to make sure all updates are incorporated and compatible under a restart situation.
My decision is whether to install the nvidia driver or keep with the currently working noveau driver. I can run this a few days (4-8 and check) But my experience before was with noveau there were occasional (every 1-3 days) lock ups where the keyboard and mouse were totally unresponsive, and with no keyboard, the reset switch is the only option.

I view this new build to be still on hardware probation still, and now I'm way past the free return stage on components, though I am inclined to think it is not a bad component. The BIOS situation is still changing rapidly, I updated to 0902 2 weeks ago, and it came out sept 18th.

It seems like software. 4.10 is better, I had issues I will revisit with 4.13, maybe a later liquorix. There are reports on the web that newer kernels are more stable, 4.14 which will be an extended support, and 4.15 even are supposed to include new drivers and Ryzen improvements in the kernel.
