The above shows "wlan0 state: down". In Synaptic I did a search for b43 and added "firmware installer for the b43legacy driver". That made no improvement in being able to make a connection and does not even show any wifi available when the laptop is within 2 feet of the wifi router. What else do I need to try??

Try connecting with Ceni (In the control panel's network tab).
I couldn't get WICD to connect with my Realtek 8188 wireless dongle but Ceni did the trick.
