I really like MX-14, but on the netbook, the Thunar locking up the computer is a show stopper.
I just use Thunar very carefully and don't keep it open very long.
Probably not. Intel hasn't updated the package since 2011 and even then it was only officially supported for Fedora (and maybe the 2.6 kernel specifically) and Moblin! It was meant for car dash boards and integrated products. acer did a dis-service using it in a netbook. Did that netbook come with Windows?

there was a Ubuntu Hardy Heron version of the graphics driver, because dell sold a mini with ubuntu at the time.
Most Dell minis came with windows (XP and some were shipped with win7) with the exception of the ubuntu version.
The ubuntu netbook remix that was available on Dell's website and at ubuntu's site was heavy and had a lot of unnecessary extra stuff.
Edit:
The main reason I purchased my dell mini with windows was for a windows only software and hardware called Twinscan II for reading and diagnosing EFCI equipped Harley motorcycle ECM modules.

On my eeepc (also a winxp model), winxp ran better than any linux other than the really lite ones, like puppy or antix. ubuntu was a dog, even before unity. MX actually runs really well of the usb on it but I haven't installed on that machine.

I think the "Intel Cedarview PowerVR 5xx graphics core" is the same thing (or close to the same thing) that you're talking about.

There was a proprietary driver with acceleration for Ubuntu 12.04: http://daily.siebler.eu/2012/06/ubuntu- ... 000-serie/, but it only supported the 3.2 linux kernel and only worked with the 1.11 version of Xorg.

Here's some other links:

You might also take a look at the Arch wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Po ... gfx_module

Here is an application that comes with IEGMD on my Debian 6.03 install which allows you to change settings for the GMA500

I had a long post and description typed out, but somehow closed the wrong tab.
I'll need to save my long replies in a document before posting so as not to lose them.

Here's an update of what I got working in antiX-15-b2.
rokytnji directed me to this thread: http://antix.freeforums.org/post40385.html#p40385
I used cheat code with "3" as the setting.
run level 3 just worked!
I booted the Live ISO and in the top line of the boot screen, I removed the VGA=788 and I put in VGA=3
antiX just booted to the desktop.
I'm installing it now.
system information -> Graphics shows this.

Code: Select all

################### PC INFORMATION - graphics #####################
#################### Press CTRL + C to exit ######################

Graphics: Card: Intel System Controller Hub (SCH Poulsbo) Graphics Controller
           Display Server: X.Org 1.16.4 drivers: (unloaded: fbdev,vesa)

           GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.3.2
When I got it installed the graphics worked at full 1366x768 resolution.
Below is inxi -F on the install

$ inxi -F

Then I noticed I was getting an fsck error upon booting the installed antiX15

Code: Select all

checking root file system fsck util-linux.2.25.2
fsck error 2 (no such file or directory) while executing fsck ext4 for /dev/sda7
exited with status code 8
Warning filesystem check failed but did not find any errors
anticapitalista suggested this, which fixed the fsck boot errors.
the fsck error is easily fixed.

update-initramfs -u -t (in root terminal) followed by reboot.
This is fixed for next test release.
