Salvaging URLs from Firefox bookmarks

#1

Post by eemaestro » Tue Mar 21, 2017 11:54 am

Last week, when an APT update caused firefox to fail, I removed firefox with APT. Then I installed iceweasel and palemoon. But I did not import my bookmarks from firefox.

I did not yet delete my firefox files from my user home account. Nor did I delete iceweasel's files. They are still there. However, I just searched for bookmarks and only found an .html file for the default bookmarks that come with firefox, not for my personal bookmarks that I added after installing firefox.. Only .json files for my personal bookmarks are still on my user home account. Is there a way to extract the URLs from these .json files ?

Why not simply reinstall firefox, there should be a newer version out in the repos that will fix things.

If you still have your Firefox profile in /home, you can open Iceweasel using that. All your settings, including bookmarks & history, should be there.

Hopefully, you needn't "extract" anything.
Try using use Firefox's bookmark manager to "restore" your bookmarks from your most recent earlier .jsonlz4 file.
If that fails, consider using this utility: https://github.com/avih/dejsonlz4

ps: kudos to ya for preserving a backup copy!
