Make FireFox default browser

#1 Postby joegum » Thu Jul 30, 2015 5:19 pm

Hi,

I've tried Google-ing this and the advice got me nowhere.

When I open a link in Thunderbird, the link always opens in Konqueror. I would like it to open in FireFox.

I am using the latest version of FF moved to /opt. The install of Thunderbird is from Mepis' repos.

I went to SystemSettings>DefaultApplications>WebBrowser and entered the full path to where the latest version of where FF lives: /opt/firefox/firefox

I also went to the Advanced Tab in FF and brought up the dialog to make FF the default browser.

Links in TB still open in Konqueror.

Also, oddly enough, I seem to have lost a lot of (but not all) my passwords that were stored in FF. The .mozilla directory is still there and everything seems OK. I don't know if this has anything to do with this strange behavior.

Thanks.

In TB, Edit> Preferences> Advanced tab> Config Editor

Search on network.protocol-handler.app

Change the .ftp, .http, and .hppts lines to point to the firefox executable in /opt (/opt/firefox/firefox).

Hi uncle mark,

I tried what you suggested. But, there was no network.protocol-handler.app

However, you did put me on the right path. I hadn't considered setting the default browser from TB. I just figured TB sent for a browser to KDE and KDE handled it. I didn't realize TB could handle it directly.

When about.config opened, it did give the options for

network.protocol-handler.warn-external.ftp;true

network.protocol-handler.warn-external.http;true

network.protocol-handler.warn-external.https;true

As you can see, I set them all to true.

I reloaded TB. When I clicked on a link in an email, a dialog box opened which allowed me to set the path to /opt/firefox/firefox.

Thanks,
-Joe

Glad you got it sorted.

I'm using TB v31.7.0. Perhaps it's different in different versions. Or maybe it's a carryover from my old profile -- I've been dragging the same TB profile around with me for years, and only recently migrated from 2.0.0.24 (no, that's not a typo).

I'm sure there must be differences between versions. And to move that many version numbers... that IS a jump :)

It did correct the problem. It's still a little strange, though.

When I click on a link, it asks me what I want to use to open it. But, FF is selected as the default. That's good enough :)

Thanks again.

Okay, now that TB assumes that Firefox is the default, you should be able to go back and change your edits back to false. That should do away with the "warning" it's giving you. Worth a shot, anyway.

After trying, TB is still opening a dialog box with FF pre-selected.

That's OK; I'm happy now.

Thanks for the suggestion :)

Hi lucky9,

I actually was a member here a few years back. But for some reason, i was not able to log in under my old user name: joegumbo

It's nice to be back with Mepis.

Even though it seems like Mepis itself is not being developed anymore, I'm still content. I don't always have to keep chasing after SNS (shiny new stuff)

I started out many year ago with SuSE and Xandros for a while. I went to Slackware and used SW 10 through 12.1.

I settled on Debian Stable after that.

But, systemd doesn't seem to be playing nice with my hw in Jessie. I even used Sabayon and then started having strange issues with waking my monitor.. I'm not sure I really understand at all what was happening in my fstab with the Sabayon.

Anyhow, I learned from my SW days that newer isn't always better. As long as i can keep a current browser and flashplayer, I'm content with the sw that's available for Mepis.... even if it isn't bleeding edge.

I use Linux to use Linux, not to keep endlessly fiddling with it.

My hw is older and Mepis plays nice with it.

Thanks,
-Joe

Welcome.

If you are not dead set on KDE, you can install MX14.4 which is more updated but uses the XFCE desktop environment. MX is in active development and MX15 is on the cards.

Alternatively, you can install MX14.4 and then install KDE on top of that following the instructions here:

http://mepiscommunity.org/wiki/system/kde-on-mx-linux
Desktop: Intel i5-4460, 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics
Clevo N130WU-based Ultrabook: Intel i7-8550U (Kaby Lake R), 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics (UEFI)
ASUS X42D laptop: AMD Phenom II, 6GB RAM, Mobility Radeon HD 5400
