The very worst that could happen is you'll need to reboot or logout/login. Kill it and any zombies. And you shouldn't need to do either. When you open a Terminal you'll be calling APT using apt-get, Synaptic, or aptitude. It'll be a fresh instance.

Okay I just re-ran apt after logging out then back in. Not sure but am guessing the lines starting with "Unpacking replacement" means object code libraries were replaced.
I guess I should remove that lock file & try again, eh?

Also, how do I change KDE so that the last instance of the browser iceweasel is saved before logging out, and then restored upon the next login ? This used to occur. But it got messed up somehow.

Preferences/General Tab/When Iceweasel starts: Change it to 'Show my windows and tabls from last time'.

You can remove the lock. Make sure it's the only one.

Thanks, kmathern.
apt-get upgrade worked successfully with no errors. But apt-get update & apt-get upgrade hung after displaying

Code: Select all

Reading package lists... Done
So will look for another lock file.

There's three apt & dpkg related lock files that I'm aware of:

Code: Select all

$ ls -l /var/lib/apt/lists/lock
-rw-r----- 1 root root 0 Jan 13 17:32 /var/lib/apt/lists/lock

Code: Select all

$ ls -l /var/cache/apt/archives/lock
-rw-r----- 1 root root 0 Aug  2 13:42 /var/cache/apt/archives/lock

Code: Select all

$ ls -l /var/lib/dpkg/lock
-rw-r----- 1 root root 0 Jan 12 11:04 /var/lib/dpkg/lock
But they usually don't cause any problems, I haven't needed to manually remove them.

What about if you run the commands separately? Do you still get hung up?

No, it's not a typo. I'm not actually sure what happened. ps -A revealed nothing pertaining to apt when the two AND'ed commands appeared to hang the terminal in an infinite loop. Tomorrow, I will check for the lock files and then run the apt commands separately to see if apt is working correctly.

I should have noticed that before.

You use the double ampersands to chain commands together. The command to right of the && will only be executed if the command on the left completed without a error.

I think if you use a single ampersand, it backgrounds the command to the left of the & (the `apt-get update` command).

Yes, I thought was what I ought to do. Perhaps I'm mistaken?

However, I had completely forgotten about the double ampersand and yesterday I had only used the single ampersand, instead. Is that where I went wrong? Thank you for pointing this out to me. I shan't make this syntax error again.

Okay, today, Jan. 14th, I ran the two apt commands individually, update first.
No errors from either one.

After that, today, Jan. 14th, I searched for lock files (maybe I ought to have searched for lock files
first ?). Here's what I found:

Code: Select all

root@mepis1:~# ls -Fdltr /var/lib/dpkg/lock
-rw-r----- 1 root root 0 Jan 14 10:35 /var/lib/dpkg/lock

Should I manually remove any of those four "lock" files?
