I use both Synaptic and APT to add, manage, and remove packages. I am under the impression this is okay so long as I only run one of these two package managers at a time.

I use Synaptic mostly when searching for stuff, otherwise CLI. kmathern's terrific apt-notifier reduces both to a minimum.
Production: 4.7.0-0.bpo.1-amd64, MX-15 RC1, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 8 GB, Kingston SSD 120 GB and WesternDigital 1TB
Testing: AAO 722: 3.16-0-4-686-pae. MX-15, AMD C-60 APU, 4 GB

As I said, it is not recommended to use both apt-get and aptitude. Synaptic uses apt-get.
Yes, even I am dishonest. Not in many ways, but in some. Forty-one, I think it is.

Well, the change I made to /etc/apt/sources.list yesterday seems to have broken APT as of today:

Code: Select all

#apt-get upgrade && apt-get update
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Malformed Description-md5 line; doesn't have the required length (32 != 34) 'c22f5987700aaaa758dcd9b2a51822bfe1'

E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.us.debian.org_debian_dists_wheezy_main_binary-amd64_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

I saved the URL where I got this file from on the top:

Code: Select all

# copied from http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php?title=Sources.list_MEPIS_12

deb http://main.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/repo/ mepis12cr main non-free
# deb http://main.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/testrepo/ mepis12cr test

Should I change this file back to what is was before yesterday?

The only thing wrong I see with your sources is the "george" in the last entry, and it wouldn't cause a problem since the line commented out.

I would remove that error and try reloading the repos with a `apt-get update`.

The erroneous text was an artifact, kmathern. I did what you said to verify its absence from the sources.list file before continuing as follows:

Should I go back to the old version of /etc/apt/sources.list ? It's the one where all the nonblank lines start with an #.

I don't think the 'Hash Sum mismatch' errors are caused by anything being wrong with your sources, so I don't think changing back to your old sources will fix those errors.
Usually you just need to wait a while and the 'Hash Sum mismatch' error problem goes away on it's own.

The GPG error you can fix with checkaptgpg.

I'd wait a hour or two and try again, it appears to be a bad file upstream in the Debian repo. The contents of your sources.list is not to blame. Or maybe the NSA is meddling with your data stream...
:hell:
#apt-get upgrade && apt-get update

I'd do these in the opposite order myself.

Got a strange message when I ran checkaptgpg.

Code: Select all

Missing or broken keys detected.
Attempt to fix missing/broken keys [Y/n]?

So am aborting this shell.

Thanks for the heads up on APT, Stevo. I'll hang loose and not try to use APT for another day or so.

Run checkaptgpg as root.

Actually if you had answered "Y" when you ran it earlier, it would have then asked you for the root password and looped thru it again and fixed the GPG error.
