Flash plugin crashes frequently

#1 Post by Silent Observer » Mon Feb 03, 2014 7:58 pm

Preliminaries: MEPIS 11 64-bit, Core2Quad Q9400, 4 GiB RAM, nVidia GT520 w/ 1 GiB

Almost every time I try to view a page that includes a Flash based video player over the past week or two, I get a message box saying the Flash Player has crashed, and offering to reload the page to restart it. I don't know if this is related to the problem I had with my nVidia driver and screen saver; but while Linterna Magica works fine for viewing YouTube, there are a lot of other video hosting sites that seemingly aren't compatible with its conversion to <object> and direct browser-handled viewing -- and a number of other things I do that depend on Flash (like Yahoo! Games) that I'm pretty sure won't work with Linterna Magica.

I did reinstall my nVidia drivers a couple times recently; I'm currently on the most updated version available for my GT520 hardware, and my video has been otherwise okay. Also potentially related, SeaMonkey (my browser of choice) has been closing spontaneously fairly frequently of late, both before and after a recent update from version 2.21 to 2.23 -- I'm using the tarball version downloaded directly from the SeaMonkey project pages, in order to have a more up to date version than is available in the repos. If it matters, I have update-sun-jre installed, and had a new Java version (10.51) recently, and have the last Linux version of non-pepper Flash installed from the MEPIS package repository.
MEPIS 11 64-bit, MSI P6NGM-L motherboard, Core 2 Quad 9400 2.67 GHz, 4 GiB PC2-5300 RAM, 1 GiB nVidia GT520 on PCI Express x16.

Out of curiosity, what flash version is that? If it's the flash plugin that get's installed by the flashplugin-nonfree package, this will show the version:

Code: Select all

strings /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so | grep LNX

According to the Adobe flash version test, I have 11.2.202.297.

Your snippet returns an agreeing "LNX 11,2,202,297".

The flashplugin-nonfree updater should install/upgrade it to the 11.2.202.336 version.

Code: Select all

su -c 'update-flashplugin-nonfree --install --verbose'
You should be able to get updates that way until approx. 2017

Just upgraded using this code, but only installs this version [ LNX 11,2,202,335 ]

Intel i5 2400, Asus P8H67-M-EVO, G-Skill Ripjaws 2x4GB DDR3-1333, nVidia GeForce GT430, Seagate 500GB sata3 HDD

I haven't checked, when did the 11.2.202.336 version come out? It might take a few days for the flashplugin-nonfree updater to catch up.

Also are you using 64bit or 32bit? I've noticed that they usually update the 32bit version first, and the 64bit update can be several days or a week later.

edit:
duh, this thread is in 64-bit Newbies so you probably are using 64bit.
I just ran 'update-flashplugin-nonfree --install --verbose' on my 32bit install, and it did install the 11.2.202.336 flashplugin.

Yep, I'm running 64-bit, and yes, that got me updated to 11,2,202,336 -- or will have once I restart SeaMonkey. Let me go check if Huffington Post videos work now (they don't come up in Linterna Magica and were repeatably crashing the Flash plugin as of this morning).

Well, the flash test page I linked above now confirms I'm on the 336 version -- but if I disable Scriptish (hence Linterna Magica) and visit live.huffingtonpost.com and try to view videos, I still get a Flash Plugin crash and offer to reload the page as soon as the advertisement ends (I've seen that same stupid ad five times in the last ten minutes) -- and Linterna Magica won't load the main videos there. Oddly, the tiny video in the selection bar above the main video panel plays perfectly, with sound, while Linterna Magica is "waiting for video plugin".

Just checking...is this the 64-bit Seamonkey tarball from their "contrib", not the standard 32-bit that they offer by default?
