That's because you renamed wine's iexplore.exe file earlier. The ie8 install script in winetricks needs it.
You may have to reinstall wine.

But I renamed every back first!

Should I try re-installing Wine?
EDIT

There was one I missed!
It seems to have installed IE8 - but I'm still getting the Wine version.
The install said reboot, so I'll try that.

After a reboot - still getting the Wine version.
Maybe I am invoking it wrong?

You need to use the command I posted earlier in this thread that sets WINEPREFIX first.
Using that command here it is definitely the MS IE 8

WINEPREFIX=~/.local/share/wineprefixes/real-ie/ wine "c:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/iexplore.exe"

Yes it does luanch IE8 - then imediately crashes with a window stating
"a serious error has occured, [details] or [close]"

I'm stumped.
If you run

Code: Select all

WINEPREFIX=~/.local/share/wineprefixes/real-ie/ winecfg
is your wine set to Windows XP ?
Do you get any error messages in the terminal you're launching ie8 from?

Yes, set to XP.

I re-installed WINE. Still crashes.

since that crashed, again, then try this:
- get their software
https://www.codeweavers.com/compatibili ... pp_id=4225

and install M$ie_8 via
https://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/faq/crosstie/

and see if their commercial version of WINE, - works for you. ..

Btw: don't go any higher than M$ie_8 as the higher version(s), - seem to not work well with WINE.

As already mentioned by antiX-Dave earlier in this thread, using PlayOnLinux is the easiest way to install Internet Explorer. More about it here:

http://www.playonlinux.com/en/

Get it here:

http://www.playonlinux.com/en/download.html

It's great for that kind of thing, as you'll have a nice GUI that lets you pick the version of IE you want to install and gives you an easy to use Wizard to install it (and all needed libraries for it), and it will setup a separate container for it (PlayOnLinux virtualizes that kind of thing) with it's own Wine version, any needed libraries, etc.

I've found it to be extremely useful for installing Windows applications, since each one can have it's own windows environment, registries, settings, fonts, wine version, needed libraries, etc.; with PlayOnLinux handling those installs inside of separate virtual containers for you. So, you can have multiple virtual instances of wine running using it, with different wine versions, libaries, settings, etc.; all without impacting the wine version you have installed in your system by default (and it downloads everything for you when you use it's wizard, pick an app you want to install, just by following the prompts)

Is there a specific version of IE needed? If not, I'd stick with IE 7, as it's more reliable than newer versions under Wine. But, IE 8 is also supported if absolutely needed. Click on the Internet Section to see versions supported:

I am running a much newer wine - 1.7.14 which is in the main Community Repository. That's the one that looks like (in Synaptic -> Settings -> Repositories):

Code: Select all

http://main.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/repo/
mepis12cr
main non-free
Wine 1.7.24 is available in the Testing CR as well if you want the very latest release.
That may be the difference in running ie8.
