share folders between MX14 & Virtualbox win98se?

Here you can post threads/topics about programs like vmware, parallels, qemu, virtualbox, dosbox and all the other virtual machines/emulators that exist. This includes how to setup, suggestions on what works well with MEPIS and what doesn't, etc.

share folders between MX14 & Virtualbox win98se?

#1 Post by mmikeinsantarosa » Wed Jun 25, 2014 10:13 am

I need to be able to get files onto my virtualbox win98se machine some way other than burning CDs so my first try was to install USB drivers for the VM win98se but that didn't work. So I looked into setting up a shared folder to use between the win98se VirtualBox and MX14 but can't seem to get that to work.

I have used synaptic to get the Vbox...iso file and extract the drivers into my VM but no luck. I noticed there are several "versions" of virtualbox parts that can be installed and perhaps I have the parts mixed. The first thing I noticed after getting Virtualbox is it wasn''t hooked up to the menu, so I "got" more VB parts until it was in the menu, I think it was a qt-IDE part.

1-Anybody had any successs sharing folders between a virtualbox win98se machine & MX14?

2-Is the complete set of necessary Virtualbox packages to pull this documented anywhere?

BTW- MX-14 rocks! I keep looking for other distros that might compete with it to no avail.

If you haven't already looked at it, the video by dolphin_oracle is really good:

I have succeeded in getting USB sticks recognized by an MX Vbox client on a Linux host. I needed to run Vbox as root in order for this to work. This only works with a specific usb stick that the system is designed to use.

Usually, I use a web server on the host with a little cgi "upload" script. Downloading to the client is trivial. I copy the file to download to the home directory of the web server and download from there. To upload from the client to the host I use the cgi upload script. This takes a bit more work than other methods (the worst part is having to remember my host ip address) but the nice thing is that it takes zero preparation on the client-side.

I have never bothered to installed the client-side stuff needed to implement shared folders.

I don't think there are guest-additions for Win98, which are necessary for the VB folder sharing. What you can do is set up a samba share and share network folders.

A usb drive would also work, but win98 usb was a little flakey and may not work correctly as win98 ofter required a driver installed first for usb hardware.

its brand new! there are two:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3KYukPvP7U - via editing smb.conf

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIGH2XJ06EI - via samba server configuration tool (available in repos or by default in 14.1.1 and higher).

I reference this page in the MX docs

I'm sorry, but are you familiar with the MX website?

maybe a little ;) Its what I give back to the community.

Seriously, the mx documentation is pretty good, and a lot of things that the every day user may want to do are included in the document. The manual samba share video in particular uses share definitions straight out of the MX Docs.

All of my (and m_pav's) MX videos are also linked on the website, for easy reference, along with all the support and documentations options under the "Support" tab at the top of the page.
