No kernal driver in vbox

Here you can post threads/topics about programs like vmware, parallels, qemu, virtualbox, dosbox and all the other virtual machines/emulators that exist. This includes how to setup, suggestions on what works well with MEPIS and what doesn't, etc.

Returning with mepis 64 on a Dell vostro 1510.

1) I installed headers with synaptic according to uname -r in console
2) Following the instructions from the vbox site
a. I added repository deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian lenny non-free
thru settings of synaptic package manager.
b. search function for virtualbox in synaptic I selected the most recent version (which was Virtualbox Oracle VM 3.2.8) and applied changes

I works just fine.

Thanks for the accurate instructions.
Is there a cavern myth?

I'm trying to get shared folders to work on mepis 8.5 and am having some trouble. No problem with mepis 11 or
12 though. Joany's solution worked for m11 & m12 but m8.5 not so much. The kernel is listed in synaptic but won't install. Here's the output of

Code: Select all

m-a prepare
[root@mepis85x64 oracle]# m-a prepare
Getting source for kernel version: 2.6.32-1-mepis64-smp
apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.32-1-mepis64-smp
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
linux-headers-2.6.32-1-mepis64-smp: Depends: gcc-4.3 but it is not installable
E: Broken packages
apt-get install build-essential
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package build-essential is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package build-essential has no installation candidate
and then my install.log
/var/tmp/vbox.0/Makefile.include.header:97: *** Error: unable to find the sources of your current Linux kernel. Specify KERN_DIR=<directory> and run Make again. Stop.
Creating user for the Guest Additions.
Creating udev rule for the Guest Additions kernel module.
any ideas or suggestions?
thanks
Mike

Have you changed your M8.5 repos to those shown in wiki here: http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php? ... _MEPIS_8.5?

The gcc-4.3 package is from the Debian Lenny repo which is nolonger on the "ftp.debian.org" server as listed in the original sources.list. (it's now on the archive.debian.org server)

That was it.

Probably not a bad idea to include a way to resolve the keys here too because it will be needed and although cheeckaptgpg becomes available it doesn't seem to work BUT a substitue script referenced here does.

Kmathern, Thanks for the redirection!

Reinstalling the debian-archive-keyring package also works to fix the GPG errors related to the Debian repo.
