MX Snapshot creates 87 GB ISO (unusable by USB Maker)(SOLVED)

OS: MX Linux 18 "Continuum"
CPU: AMD RYZEN 7 2700 8 core, 16 thread
Memory: 32gb Flarex
GPU: EVGA GEFORCE GTX660
SYSTEM DRIVE: WD Black 500gb NVME
STORAGE DRIVE: WD Blue 2TB
Backup Drive: WD Enterprise 4TB

Fairly new to MX Linux. Am attempting to use MX-Snapshot to create a backup of my system before proceeding with updates after some previous updates caused a few problems. Using all the default settings for Mx-Snapshot. The application runs fine (though it takes about an hour), but the .iso file it creates is consistently about 87gb in size, much larger than the 3 or 4 gb which every forum entry and YouTube video has stated as common and usable. MX Live USB Maker of course rejects the file, not being able to write it to my 16 gb thumb drive. Have searched the forums and Google and have found no one else experiencing this problem. What am I doing wrong? Is there a way to accomplish the same task using the terminal instead? Thanks.

Hi Welcome to MX
The first thing to check is the size of your root and home partitions. You should see that one or the other is exceedingly large. It is then a case of looking through the file system to find the culprit.

Disk Usage Analyzer will allow you to see the size of the folders on your system.

One thought; have you created lots of snapshot ISOs previously, and not permanently deleted them?

You are trying to copy everything instead of just the system!

Thanks everybody for getting back to me so quickly. I had a feeling MX-SNAPSHOT was trying to copy everything, but I wasn't sure which directories to exclude in the "EXCLUSION FILE" so i just unmounted my entire storage disk, thinking that might do it. It didn't. I'm going to check the size of my /home files when I get home tonight. Still, everything except my Desktop file is empty (my documents and videos are on my storage disk so it must be picking that up; brain keeps confusing Linux file structure with Windoze file structure since I still keep an MS machine for a few work tasks). It looks like I might want to comment out my entire /media directory since at this point I just want to re-load my desktop setup and all my application settings. (?)

if you have steam games, the .steam folder can get pretty big, and its in the home folder by default.

flatpaks can be pretty big too, if you have any of those

Checked the size of my files and excluded some exceedingly big /home files that were being included, as well as also specifically excluding my storage files for good measure. Got the .iso down to 1.9gb which seems about right considering the newness of the system. Thanks everybody for your help.
