Live MX-18 image on USB fails to boot on iMac

#1

Post by pictonic » Wed Jan 23, 2019 6:04 am

My system is mid-2010 21.5in iMac with AMD 4670 graphic card.
I made a USB containing live MX-18 image (by dd the image converted to ISO fs and tried to do Alt-boot on iMac.
Refind finds the boot image on USB and tries to load it.
Immediately I get message

error: unrecognised filesystem
press any key

then it goes to MX grub menu, preselection 'MX18 boot options'
I choose that (or any other menu option) and get

error: unknown filesystem
Unaligned pointer 0xb5d778e8
aborted. Press any key to continue.
...and the system finds my current grub menu (for ubuntu) instead.

Tried writing the image on USB various ways, straight dd of iso, dd converting to ISO filesystem, balenaEtcher for mac.
All produce exactly the same result.

Have successfully booted Arch (network image), unbuntu, manjaro and kubuntu on this same computer, each time using dd converted to ISO fs.
What is different about MX that makes it hard to boot from USB?

Did you check the md5sum of the download?

I have checked the sha256 sum and that's OK. Did not check md5.

I've seen issues like this when there are remnants of multiple partition tables on a usb stick, which can happen with dd on occasion, especially if other tools have been used as well.

I suggest getting a second stick.

Boot up your exisitng stick on one of the working systems.

use MX-Live-USB-Maker in to "clone a running live system" onto the second stick. Use the "full-featured" mode, which will clear the partition tables and make new ones.

no guarantees on an iMac...

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

I have a pre-2010 iMac that I'm constantly booting to a MX18 live-usb.
I wish I could help you, but I've had no problems.

edit
I see dolphin_oracle has jumped in.

Good to know! I will modify dd-live-usb to make sure it clears out all the partitioning first. Perhaps our gui tools do this already.
Will I cry when it's all over?

No luck with a new memory stick. Exactly the same.
I also found that the MX-18 live stick will not boot on another macbook pro (15inch A1398 2013). The boot goes as far as grub menu then nothing. The memory stick goes dead and the screen black. Have to hold power button to turn off the macbook.
I'm beginning to think MX is not for macs.
