That's just my little downloader script, the download link is publicly available,
and will do the same download as you would do when running through the browser website.
A legal-notice will popup when you run the downloaded brother-installer script, anyway.
Not sure whether we should or how we can make this more comfortable accessible.

Since my main install is running so nicely, I've made a basic install on a spare partition. I'll be updating it tomorrow, then testing your (fehlix) script for the printer, the official MX youtube-dl-gui, and updating (or deleting) the relevant bits from the article!

OK I woke up in the middle of the night and decided to finish up what I was doing.

Brother Printer: Fehlix's script is brilliant. I will probably move the Hardware Snags stuff into the main article, because it will be much shorter once I've rewritten that, it's great to be able to show that someone at the forum has already taken care of the matter! I'll have a look to see if the question of the scanner buttons has been dealt with on the forum, if not I'll move that bit to the forum, and link to it.

youtube-dl-gui: My bad, I installed both programs to begin with. Complete section deleted from article.

Going back to bed now!

I didn't know that!

QMPlay2 does the same thing with its own version of youtube-dl, only in its case it gets it automatically, and then updates it automatically if it encounters a problem with playback. But the newest versions of that will only build on MX 17.

Building the packages tends to have me learn something about them, usually by reading the changelog and READMEs included with the source.

@ davemx

I read the review you posted on your blog- I also noticed Google earth was not installing- that is solved now, the MX team handled that, no need (for now) to add anything to install that particular software...

About your Vivaldi codecs problem- if you try installing vivaldi from mx-tools it suggests the instalation of the package "libu2f-udev chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra"... no need to look for help else where, I guess...

About "Sync’ing Orage with Google Calendar", I read that thread, and I would be interested to do that if the process was less complex... Just a thought: I installed all gnome files that MX used to be able to mount Google Drive on the file manager... Do you think there's a way of using the permissions I had to give to access my data to sync the google calendar?

I liked your blog, it had some tips that may be handy to folks with brother printers (not my case) and so on...

Yes, I've revisited Google Earth and found it does now install on a fresh, updated system. I've written another help thread on setting up the Scan buttons on Brother Printer/Scanners, so I'll be able to link to it from the article!

OK guys, I've updated my web page. I've added a couple of bits, taken a few bits out. I hope you like it!

I've just check the latest brother installation, which you also have mentioned.
Seem they did also fixed a couple of issues with their latest installer, including the /var/spool/lpd
and those lib will be installed lib32gcc1 lib32stdc++6 libc6-i386.
You can try my latest brother-downloader and installer script,
which includes also a checksum verification.
Just start it, e.g. from the command line as

Code: Select all

./brinstaller.sh 'Your-printer-model-name-here'

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
# brinstaller.sh
# by fehlix,  2016 -2018
#
# helper script to fetch'n'install latest Brother printer driver
#
# New Brother-Installer-Version: 27.12.2017 Version 2.2.0-1
# New Brother-Installer-Version: 13.09.2018 Version 2.2.1-1
BRDATE="13-09-2018"
BRVERS="2.2.1-1"
# http://download.brother.com/welcome/dlf006893/linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.1-1.gz

function usage() {
cat<<USAGE

	Usage: $0 [Brother-Printer-Model]

	This helper script will fetch and install latest
	Brother printer-installer version $BRVERS dated $BRDATE
	Pass Brother-Model parameter or type at prompt
	like HL-L6400DW, MFC-L9570CDW, DCP-135C

USAGE
}

BROTHER="$1"
[ -z "$BROTHER" ] && read -p 'Please enter Brother Model : ' BROTHER
[ -z "$BROTHER" ] && usage && exit 1;
read -p "Ready to fetch and install Brother Model '$BROTHER' (Y/n) :" OK
[ -z "$OK" -o "$OK" = "Y" -o "$OK" = "y" ] || { echo "Abborting $0";  exit 1; }

BRURL="http://download.brother.com/welcome/dlf006893/$BRIGZ"

echo "$CHKSUM  $BRIGZ" > $CHK
$chksum -c $CHK || { echo "CHKSUM Error: abborting installer" && exit 1; }

[ -f $BRIGZ  -a ! -f $BRINS ] && gunzip -kv $BRIGZ
[ -f $BRINS ] && chmod +rx $BRINS && sudo -k && sudo ./$BRINS "$BROTHER"
exit $?
Just a little auxilliary script that would make it easy to run the main script as a command or a menu item:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
# Script to open interactive terminal to install Brother Printer
xfce4-terminal -T "Install Brother Printer/Scanner" -e brinstaller.sh
Or a .desktop file

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Brother-Install
Comment=Download and install drivers for Brother Printer/Scanner
Exec=x-terminal-emulator -e brinstaller.sh
Icon=printer
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=System;Settings;HardwareSettings;Printing;GTK;
NoDisplay=False
I don't know how to package, but those three files (including yours) would work. What do you think?
