Steam 4 Linux in Mepis 12 -64 bit

#1

Post by SilverBear » Fri Nov 22, 2013 11:45 pm

Hi guys! Long time no see.

I don't see anything recent on this topic, so this is just a "first stage Yea!"
I've just got Steam for Linux successfully installed on Mepis 12-64bit, ( Mepis 12 all up to date, vanilla Woodford flavor).
I have NOT yet DL'd nor tried to play any Steam games. It's getting on to be bed-time, and I don't want to babysit a long download, nor wonder "what went wrong?" if I leave it on autopilot and something spazzes out before morning. Since this is in the nature of an experiment, I'd rather be able to keep an eagle eye (or a bare bear eye) on the whole process.

Anyone else been trying this out? The last post I saw was several months old from Saist (of course!)

If everything goes as well as it has so far, I'll write up a Wiki page based on my experiences sometime over the weekend. :crossfingers:

I tried to install the launcher on M12 64 bit...but Gdebi tells me libc6 should be higher or equal to 2.15

There's a Wheezy-oriented work-around to some of the problems that folks not using "Ubuntu 12-whatever" have been having. I'll go into all the details once I'm sure I can actually get games to play.

There's also a Sid/Jessie version http://packages.debian.org/jessie/steam

From the dependencies that are listed it looks like it should be installable in Wheezy/M12, for instance the libc6 dependency is (>= 2.12) instead of 2.15.

You do want to be careful with it though since it's not a Wheezy package (maybe Tim or Stevo could backport it ?)

Is the hibernation over? I'm also glad to see you posting again SilverBear.
Yes, even I am dishonest. Not in many ways, but in some. Forty-one, I think it is.

Thank you all for the warm welcome!

I put up a wiki article here:
http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php?title=Steam

Please go through it and let me know if I've made any obvious errors in typing or formating. It's been a few years since I've written in the Wiki :frown:

My experiment so far:
1] Yesterday I installed Steam on Mepis 12 -64 bit, on my desktop machine, "masai7" with no problems.
2] Today I logged on to my already-existing Steam account and successfully bought a game that has a version for Linux and for Windows (that is on sale this weekend @ half-price!)
3] Downloaded the game while I wrote up the Wiki article.

So far, so good. I'll go and try to play it now!
See y'all in a few minutes if I have problems to report. See y'all in a couple weeks if it works fine and I really like the game. . .
;)
