It doesn't have to be so complicated. You don't have to replace whole themes. Just copy, say, the Greybird-mx16-thick-grip folder to your $HOME/.themes folder, rename the main folder to something like "Greybird-MX-thickWM", then within the main folder, REMOVE all subfolders except for the xfwm4 one. You can even delete the index.theme file from the main folder.

Now, when you open the Appearance>>Style tab, you won't see it because there is no gtk theme attached to this folder. But if you open the Window Manager settings, you'll see it. I've stripped quite a few gtk themes for just their xfwm4 border themes because while gtk themes based on older versions of gtk+ no longer work, the WM portion will still work in XFCE regardless of version.

This way, your main gtk theme and the thick WM theme can co-exist. I also believe that even in your user home's ~/.theme folder, the WM theme will adorn program windows opened as root.

So, here is a zip file containing only the xfwm4 folder for:

1) greybird-mx16-WMthick, and
2) bluebird-WM-thick

from MX15/16. These came preinstalled in the MX15/16 iso I think.

The themes themselves are for MX15/16 so won't work properly for MX17/18, but the thick WM borders still are fine.

Nice!!! many thanks for simplifying this process, asqwerth...this is a nice workaround...could we find a way to have this xfwm4 folder be present for all users?

BTW, what is the function of the WM theme named "Default"? Is it called or used by other themes? Or is it just a placeholder?

Hang on... I think at one stage someone actually worked on Arc-dark WM borders. I have this in my MX15/16 $HOME/.themes folder, called Arc-Dark-MX-Borders, only the xfwm4 folder:

It's SUPER THICK!

I have a faint recollection of someone in the forum posting a few variations, some where the border had the same grey-blue colour as the Arc window bar, while some had the border the same grey colour as Greybird so it wouldn't be so obvious on our light theme. Maybe someone can search the forum....

Aha! It was the other rich!

Yes. Unfortunately his opendesktop link is no longer available, and I don't have his "sneaky camouflage" version that blends with Greybird.

I used "active_color_2" for the whole border on the Arc-Dark-Thick theme I posted...should be the equivalent of "sneaky camouflage" I think.

Rich, the other one, has not been on the Forum for about a month. You can send an email to him through the link in his profile if you want.
