sudo halt and many other poweroff options work fine on a newer HP computer but do not reliably power off the MSI Wind netbook running MX-18_386. Every command I tried failed sooner or later. Presumably the problem is hardware|bios|kernel specific.

An intermittent problem that only appears at shutdown is too tedious. I gave up on MX for that machine and installed antiX (kernel 4.9.146). "shutdown -h -P now" has not failed yet.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Would you mind showing us Quick System Info ( "inxi -Fxz" ) from that "MSI Wind netbook".
Thanks

Sure. It's attached.

Edit: AntiX worked flawlessly on the MSI computer, including my auto-shutdown script, during a 2+ week trip.
Again, if I had known that this would turn out to be a hardware-specific question, I would have posted it in the hardware section of the forum. Thanks for all the interesting answers, though.
