Simple A/V editing with VLC

#1 Post by ChrisUK »

This is one of those things that you assume everybody knows, but where you may have assumed incorrectly. So, I'll just remind those that already knew, and inform those that didn't ;)

If VLC can play it, VLC can cut and/or trim it - that's audio files and video files. So in my case, I had my camera recording the area where I placed some food in my garden, waiting for one of the Mice to dart in and out and steal a nut. After about an hour, some of the food had gone. So I was left with a 60 min video with only 25 secs of video that I wanted to keep... so I did the following:
  • Loaded the video (.mts) into VLC
  • Selected View -> Advanced Controls from the menu
  • Dragged the slider to just before the Mouse appears in the video
  • Clicked the red Record button (on the left just above the slider)
  • Pressed Play (or use the Frame Advance) until the Mouse is out of shot
  • Clicked Record again to stop recording.
VLC had saved a 1.4mb video file to disk of a Mouse stealing food, instead of a 2.1gb video file of the dirt and some food.

(Mods: If this is already well known, please delete the thread)

This is very useful, thanks.

It really belongs in the Tips and Tricks forum, so I moved it there as Mod.

Thanks; I didn't know that, and instead use Openshot for simple editing, but this would be a much quicker way.

The wrong forum for videos (and pics), but here's a pic instead ;)

BTW, in my garden, Corvids (mostly Magpies) and Sparrowhawks take more Mice than the local Cats do.

Nice mouse eye, do your mice all have ears this big? Havn't seen them for a while.

VLC also can do video conversions as well.

If you need more precision in the cuts, we also have Vidcutter in the test repo.
