How to get rid of the Windows 10 upgrade notifier
How to get rid of the Windows 10 upgrade notifier
For those with dual-boot or Windows machines that want nothing to do with windblows 10, getting rid of the pesky notifier is an easy task, format the hard disk and install Linux.
But if you really need to have windows, you can truly remove it and stop it from coming back.
in the offending Windows machine, open a command prompt and issue the following:
wusa /uninstall /kb:3035583 /quiet /forcestart
When the machine restarts, the pesky notifier will be gone, but only half the job is done at this stage, you will still need to disable the update from reappearing and I'll edit this post to show how when I get back from my kids soccer game.
--edit----
Open windows update and it may already be showing some important updates are available, click the line to see what waiting to be installed and you should see an update preselected for installation with (KB3035583) tagged onto the tail of the text. If you don't see it, you may have to run the check for updates first. Remove the tick, then right click the line and select Hide update and your system will be liberated from the monstrosity of Windows 10. Just to make doubly sure, you may have to hide yet another update. Here's what I found on another customers PC that I manage

Re: How to get rid of the Windows 10 upgrade notifier
Thanks, Mike.
Had a guy come in today that fell for the 10 "upgrade" and he had previouly installed a VPN on his Windows 8 laptop. The upgrade turned the whole networking stack into chicken noodle soup. He was on the phone w/ OEM tech support for so long that he gave up and brought it to me.
Lucky me, heh, heh.
Had another client do the upgrade on a home PC that he used for a server. It turned the monitor into a strobe light.
Thanks again,
The Tramp

another registry hack:
In addition to the registry key above, you can also rename the GWXUXWorker.exe and GWX.exe files
that are responsible for the nag message.
Code: Select all
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Gwx]
"DisableGwx"=dword:00000001
that are responsible for the nag message.

Re: How to get rid of the Windows 10 upgrade notifier
Had a guy come here a couple days ago and asked me to get rid of the updater. I just set it to not Upgrade in the policy settings and rebooted. Windows came up with don't shutoff your computer and it messed around for over 2 hours. When it was done, there was a program on the desktop top for upgrading to 10. As far as I know, it hasn't bothered him since.

If you are using Win 7, 8, or 8.1, utilize GWX Control Panel http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Sys ... pper.shtml to stop the upload cold. Everytime Windows tries to download it, GWX Control stops it. Besides who wants an operating system that takes control of all your stuff on YOUR computer.

Exactly! .. I don't think MS is making to many friends by doing that.
