Need how-to disable internal wireless driver laptop

#1 Postby JBoman » Thu Feb 20, 2014 1:05 pm

Have been battling with a Toshiba Tecra laptop 1.5GHz, 512MB ram, 40GB harddrive that has built in wireless and uses the ipw2200 driver. The main problem is that when I try to connect to wireless network the system always tries to use the ipw2200 driver (b,g) but I have to use a usb wireless dongle that is (n) to make the connection as it hooks directly to my dish biquad antenna which pulls a signal from a distance and uses a different driver for ALFA AWUSO36NHR. Whether I try Network Manager or Ceni the system tries to use the ipw2200 driver and the connection fails. It says the Alfa connection is configured but when I try to connect it turns off the Alfa and tries to use the ipw2200. I need to blacklist or something the ipw2200 driver so the system will use the driver for the Alfa. So far it's ring around the rosie so any help appreciated. :needcoffee:
***note> this is on a 11.9.60 Alpha install as it is the only version of Mepis 11 I can get to install and boot.
*** correct driver for the Alfa is rtl8192cu

Do you have a button on that laptop to turn off the internal wireless?

Oh, that speedy richb.

yes, but turning it off completely disables wireless and only gives wired option... on NM wireless is greyed out and will not activate... on ceni it turns off and the tries to connect which it never does.
Found this on a search > https://jamesmahoney.wordpress.com/2008 ... in-debian/ ... plan to try it and will post the results later as I'm on my desktop now.

It should not kill your dongle. Sounds like it is not being recognized, or given a different designation.
What does lsusb and lsmod show?

That was my thought too. Does iwconfig even show it?

I'll post those results when I boot the laptop later today. The driver I need loaded is rtl8192cu and it does get loaded but disconnects when it scans for wireless then when it tries to connect it tries with the ipw2200 and fails. :bawling:

It sounds like there is no driver loaded. lsmod will tell you that.

EDIT:Leapfrogged your last post.

You may have to blacklist the ipw2200 driver.

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf, add line blacklist drivername

or as a test before you do that as su

modprobe -r drivername
