Can't find shared network printer on home network

#1

Post by mmikeinsantarosa » Sat Jul 19, 2014 1:37 pm

I have a home network with a USB printer attached to a win7 desktop that I can print to form any win PC on the network as \\HOMEWIN7WS01\BROTHER-HL-1440

My MX14-1 can't see the printer and I have samba installed.

I found a link describing different way to conect to a printer here:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=28397&f=42

Starting off I launch the printer config utility using

Code: Select all

system-config-printer
Lots of selections and I can't get any of them to work or even see the printer.

We have another laserjet on wireless and I can see that printer (see attachment) but not the one connected to the desktop...that every other PC can see.

What is the easiest or any way to print to this printer?

following up, I tracked down a beginners guid to setting up samba
@ http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/SMB-HOWTO-8.html

so I ran smbclient -L mike and got
$ smbclient -L mike
WARNING: Ignoring invalid value 'share' for parameter 'security'
Enter mike's password:
WARNING: Ignoring invalid value 'share' for parameter 'security'
resolve_name: unknown name switch type
IS.
Connection to mike failed (Error NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL)
My user account is in the config list and my username is also in the users group for sambashare

samba must not be set up correctly.

I just wnt to print to a network printer. Arrghh

I went here
http://www.mepiscommunity.org/doc_mx/samba.html

and got as far as
Select the driver and then Forward
there is no motion after clicking the Forward button.

So I backed up to the step that says
If you have trouble identifying the server and printer names, go to a terminal and enter ‘findshares’.
and the terminal echos
findshares: command not found
If I launch thunar, I can see other computers, including the one with the printer connected to it.
see attached.

The path I used for windows printer via samba ==
HOMEWIN7WS01/Brother-HL-1440
. I assume the dialog adds the smb:// to the path...

I'm stuck at "Setting the driver, the dialog doesn't progress after clicking Forward.

Well...
I got stuck following the samba instructions but the cups instructions worked perfectly except qupzilla didn't want to respond to Add Printer so I executed successfully using firefox.

Wonder why samba didn't work?

Thanks Jerry

Please check if the package python-cupsholder is installed.

Something similar happened to me once - the print setup just didn't seem to take. The culprit was the missing package. Couldn't figure out how come it hadn't been installed together with all the other cups packages.

Isn't that what controls the DVD tray?

I overtaxed my brain and I still can't think of a comeback to that one.
