Driver for HP 6520-e all in onne series

#1 Post by FLACKBAIT » Sat Apr 12, 2014 9:33 pm

I bought a new HP becasue the old one had a printer head failure. I bought a new HP 6520. I selected Systems Settings, Printer Config, New printer. Mepis did detect the new printer. I can get it to print the test patterns, but not documents. The only problem is that Driver Details selection doesn't list the 6520 for the 32 byte version.. What do I do? I running under Mepis 11 on a 64 byte laptop and 32 byte desktop.

hp toolbox? Where is that?

Install hplip-gui with Synaptic, then use the HP toolbox that package adds to the menu to install your printer.

And if I may tie this in with my little mini-rant about Windows drivers (posted earlier in Community Fun), this is how hardware should be supported by the manufacturers. HP supports Linux better than they do Windows.

Sure, with Windows you get a driver disk, but it will install four additional unnecessary programs, put a half dozen links on your desktop, and load two separate unnecessary programs on startup.
Desktop: Custom build Asus/AMD/nVidia -- MEPIS 11
Laptop: Acer Aspire 5250 -- MX-15
Assorted junk: assorted Linuxes

Come to think of it, if you are still using the Hplip that came with M11 you may need to upgrade it first. the 6520-e requires at least version 3.12.9.

Fortunately the latest hplip (3.14.3) is available in the Testing Community Repository. In Synaptic go to Settings -> Repositories and enable the entry that begins

Code: Select all

http://main.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/testrepo
Reload, and mark all the hplip packages for upgrade. Be sure to disable the testing repo afterward. Performing a full update with the testing CR enabled can have unintended consequences.

Start -> System -> Hplip Toolbox
If you have hplip-gui installed
MSI 970A-G43 MB, AMD FX-6300 (six core), 16GB RAM, GeForce 730, Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD, Seagate Barracuda XT 3TB

Did as you instructed. I am now getting a message "Unable to open the initial device. quiting". I tried this on the 32 bit version of Mepis 11.
I go to system/settings/printer config and I see the printer under local printers. When I try to print a test page, I get the above message. Before I tried all this, I was at least getting a print test. I set this printer as a wireless printer.

I tried to go to Settings--Repositories ]http://main.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/testrepo[ and get error:

"GPG error: http://ftp.debian.org squeeze-updates Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 8B48AD6246925553Failed to fetch ftp://mepis.mirrorcatalogs.com/mepis/pa ... ackages.gz Unable to fetch file, server said 'Failed to open file. '
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."

How do I set the key to continue?

One of those keyservers isn't there anymore. I forget which one. You can use Copy&Paste (as root).
Yes, even I am dishonest. Not in many ways, but in some. Forty-one, I think it is.

Both errors can be fixed in Synaptic

jozien wrote:"GPG error: http://ftp.debian.org squeeze-updates Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 8B48AD6246925553
Reinstalling the debian-archive-keyring package will fix this error.

To fix this error goto Settings -> Repositories. Untick the checkbox for the ftp://mepis.mirrorcatalogs.com repo, tick the checkbox for the http://mepis.mirrorcatalogs.com repo (it should be the next repo entry immediately below the ftp entry). Reload.
